E55 is 2.82:1
Maybe you could adapt the ring and pinion from this to work?

Yep, not worried about a "high powered" situation. Just want both tires engaging in snow(or other engaging when when other loses traction). Instead of bouncing the brakes to try to switch them. My 96 is the basest(sp?) of models, without any extras.

E55 Differential possibility
Hello guys,
I am Metin I live in The Netherlands and a owner of a MB E55 1998 W210.
My differential makes noise and I have to change it. But my question is, is it possible to put a differential from buildingsyear 1999? My differential is 1:2,82 and 1999 also 1:2,82 but they have another part number. Can anyone help me?
