Just to clarify....

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Please understand that I have read countless forums on this subject but I need to be absolutely certain about this. Please forgive me if this has been covered before but some of the info is conflicting.
My daughter has a 2000 E320 and spilled some of her drink on the console. Now we are stuck in Park (I can use the emergency release to get to D) and stuck in "limp" mode with a check engine light on. I have tried drying and carefully cleaning the circuitry in the shifter with circuit cleaner, but no change,.
So is the best solution to change out the entire shifter mechanism ? It appears the board that controls things is located in the shifter mechanism. I hear reference to shifter control modules, but I assume this is not my problem since we know a drink was spilled.
Any clarification would be great appreciated before I remove and replace the entire shifter mechanism. Thank you for your patience.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

i prefer to diagnose the car to get the code, before change anything...
