<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Please understand that I have read countless forums on this subject but I need to be absolutely certain about this. Please forgive me if this has been covered before but some of the info is conflicting.

My daughter has a 2000 E320 and spilled some of her drink on the console. Now we are stuck in Park (I can use the emergency release to get to D) and stuck in "limp" mode with a check engine light on. I have tried drying and carefully cleaning the circuitry in the shifter with circuit cleaner, but no change,.

So is the best solution to change out the entire shifter mechanism ? It appears the board that controls things is located in the shifter mechanism. I hear reference to shifter control modules, but I assume this is not my problem since we know a drink was spilled.

Any clarification would be great appreciated before I remove and replace the entire shifter mechanism. Thank you for your patience.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You may get an Electrical shortage in main switch in the shifter itself,

i prefer to diagnose the car to get the code, before change anything...

That would mean a trip to my local MB dealer. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling letting them get their hands on it.

I grabbed a spare one of these from my local pull a part just in cas I had this same issue....I live off coffee and once I realized that the shifter was electronic and downhill from the cup holder figured it would be only a matter of time before I am in your shoes...

These shifters are easy to replace and easy enough to get off ebay or car-parts.com to locate

Please let me know how this ends!!!!

Thanks. Will do. I have a fan on it and I am letting it dry thoroughly. I try to do most of my own repairs within reason on cars that are out of warranty. Actually this happened once before to the same car (my wife spilled ice tea that time) and I was able to clean it up, dry it off, and it worked fine. I think we had to reprogram the codes to get off limp mode and it has been fine for years. This is such a common issue with W210 cars that I expected that someone here might actually have first hand knowledge. There are lots of other places to look for information. I will post what I learn (as opposed to the "just take it to the dealer" responses I have received in general so far...)

To the best of my knowledge the codes require a dealer or a shop with the software and connections to do reset the codes. My local foreign car repair shop was able to reset the codes for me when it happened the last time.
