Spring perches?

Spring perches?
My dealer while making a routine repair observed that my front spring perches are separating from body? He said it needs new ones and that it's about $1900 to install -- body shop welding, etc. Anyone ever heard of this? It's a '96 E320 with 75K, overall in nice condition. I will get another opinion from another shop, but am interested if anyone here ever heard of such a thing.
