E290TD tempomat installation (is it possible?)
Hello;
I'm Daniele from Italy, and lately I was playing with my dad's 1998 W210 (a wonderful E290TD). I have always liked that car, but since I bought a brand new CLS I started to appreciate the use of tempomat during the long highway trip....
So, I had the idea to see if I can retrofit the tempomat on the old W210.... I noticed that the tempomat contol (the lever..) costs near to nothing, and underneath the steering wheel column there is a connector that looks like the connector where I should plug the tempomat lever wiring... so is it possible that I just need to get the lever, plug the harness and maybe do some programming thru the stardyagnosis?
Do you have any experience with that?
in the attachment you'll find tho photos that I made to the connector I found under the steering column and two tempomat lever that I found in internet... the connector looks exactly the same!!

Lever
I assume Tempomat has to do with ac/heating? The lever shown has nothing to do with that system, rather, it controls lights, turn signals and cruise control. Or am I missing something here?

To correctly make the determination you first need someone with MB factory software to determine if the cars ECU can be adapted to recognize and therefore make the Tempomat function---and yes that is the Tempomat connector however without adaption an installed switch will not function.
You have much homework to do and just fooling around could possibly cook(destroy) your Dad's ECU----go grab a grapa and start reading!!

hahaha thanks for the advice!
and what if I just get an ECU from a car with tempomat (so I guess equipped with automatic transmission...) and I replace that ECU with that one?

Nope-- Tempomat is controlled differently in a manual transmission than an automatic---now you will really screw your dads car up---forget the grapa--- go get a pizza!!

the ECU swap was just an idea.... but since the stardyagnosis is involved, is any MB dealership able to do that?
other than the tempomat switch (p.n. 210 540 08 45) what else I need other than programming the ECU?

What is your VIN and I wll advise on Monday
If you can't find a Romanian with a street copy of DAS Xentry then your only alternative is the dealer, but that will be mucho lira(euros) and you will have to get a second job!!

The VIN is WDB210017A681045...
No need to find a romanian of DAS Xentry; I have one dealership 40 min from where I live and another one (it's actually M.B. Rome) 10 min from where I work, so if the probramming is possible it should be not big deal to go there...

I think that you are in luck--you have a 602.982 with a MT 717.466---you said that you found the Tempomat connector on steering column and assuming that the clutch pedal switch is working there are no other parts required.
However I still believe that you will need the HHT/DAS MB diagnostic system to recognize the new switch---however the dealer can provide that input

Hi; I have some updates: today I got the parts I have ordered and I have installed everything: it took 20 minutes at most since all the parts fits perfectly
Now I have a doubt: the tempomat connector on the CAR side, has 6 wires (2 slots on the 8 pin connector are just empty..), and the tempomat has all the 8 pin with a wire.
Looks like I have ordered the wrong stalk: instead of the stalk # 2105400845 (8 pin) I sould have ordered the stalk #2105400645 (6 pin).
the difference is that the -645 doesent have the "limit" switch and works only as cruise control, when the -845 has the limit switch (so, 2 more wires..) and it's a full tempomat switch.
How can I veruify that the pin sisposition on the connector is the same so I can keep the -845 stalk I have already? (of course the limit switch will be linked to nothing..).

My short analysis is as follows----210 540 06 45 was available on 210.010--.015 and .017 only
210 540 08 45 was available on 210.025 and .225 only.
When you look at the wiring diagrams the function of the six pins are the same on both part numbers---however I do not know if the remaining two pins are required to make the 8 pin part to fully functional when connected to a 6 connector or the 6 pin connected to 8 plug

I guess the additional two pin are the the activation to the "limit" function... so in case all the other function shoould remain the same...
Do you tnink I sould just go to the MB dealership and see if they can activate the -845 tempomat thru the stardyagnosys or it's better to get the -645 stalk before even trying to go to the dealership?

If it were me, I would grab a grappa and do it correctly---get the correct 645 stalk and sell the 845 stalk on e-bay---it will sell, but help the next sap out by indicating what models it will work on!!

Hmmm probably it's the right thing to do...
I was just curious that the 6 pin that actually works are the same of the -645 stalks, and the two that are not connected are just the two contact of the "limit".
But meanwhile, yes, I had a good drink and a piece of cake

Bad news
The -645 stalk arrived Yesterday, and I swapped the cc stalk in 15 minutes; this morning I went to the MB dealership and they tried to see if the xentry self reconized the cruise control stalk but nothing happened.
They said that the after sales tempomat installation was possible only for cars with automatic gearbox.
By the way I still don't understand why my car (manual gearbox) has the tempomat connector underneath the steering wheel column.....
Is there any other way to do that? maybe it's ecessary to "jailbreack" the original software or something like that?

The Tempomat portion of the harness is apart of the larger engine harness and it's cheaper to exclude the hardware option rather than have two seperate wiring harnesses--one with and one without!!
"Is there any other way to do that"----that is way above my pay grade!!

Hello;
I have some updates (I have been around for work and I had some sports events to attend, but now with the winter coming I can start again to play with all the old stuff I have .
I talked with a MB specialist that confirmed me that it's impossible to fit the stock tempomat unit (automatic gearbox only) on my car with manual gearbox.
However, I found several "universal unit" that can be easily fitted to my car.
Here the two I found:
http://www.rostra.com/universal-afte...-by-rostra.php
http://oldhymer.com/wp-content/uploa...iseControl.pdf
They are basically the same unit (I like more the connectors on the VDO..).
I should be able to use the tempomat stalk I have already installed (same internal switches I guess) but I need to get some info:
Can I take the VSS from one of the phonic wheels on the wheel hub? (in case I will just split the signal cables and send the signal to the unit). In case of that; how many "pulse per mile" has the W210?
Instead of installing another brake pedal switch; can I just split the signal from the stock brake pedal switch?
Do the W210 have already a clutch pedal switch? (I don't have the car here with me; i'm at work..).
So far; thanks in advance for the info.
Cheers
Daniele

2.5 years, you are persistent
All American W210 come with automatic transmissions only, so no experience with manuals.
In the past I installed CC or tempomat on lot of cars that did not have the option. The kits were available in USA for about $40 and used vacuum for power and magnets attached to driveshaft for impulse.
On older diesel Peugeot that had manual transmission, I installed the magnet on alternator pulley, so did not have to worry about clutch pedal switches.
That also allowed me to set high idle when parking with AC on.
But technology change and with digital cars you have different technology. When you consider one of those you linked - read the description very carefully to make sure it will fit.
MB have very sophisticated control system and don't allow easy modifications.

Yeah you are right; the truth is that sometimes I really like to play with those old cars .
The installation shouldnt be too hard on the W210 290TD, since the TPS is easily accessible and I already have most of the switches needed. I might need to play a bit with the component location, but let's see f this is the right time.
in the attachment a pair og photos I got from the web; one is the hood with the TPS loction, another one is the TPS itself; with a simple drawing of how should be possible to install the cruise contol cable.
I can easily get an used TPS assembly so I can make the modifications, and once everything is rigged, intstall the actuator.
PS. Just to play a bit more, I ordered a differential with a longer ratio (2,87 Vs 3,07..). I always thought that the car had short gears.
My target is to get the same mpg i'm getting from my modern age CLS. I think at medium speed it should be possible.
