Engine won't start

I have an 1999 E320 that starts intermitantly. The engine cranks but shuts down after a few seconds. I can sometimes hear the fuel pump hum then it will start. If I don't hear the hum it won't. The only thing I've tried so far is replacing the fuel pump relay. That wasn't the problem. Any help is appreciated. Also, this has been happening on and off for about 3 weeks.
