transmission oil change tips
Hi all,
I've had my 2002 E430 4MATIC for a couple years. I've changed all the fluids since I purchased it except the trans fluid and just had a few questions. I scheduled a transmission service with my local mechanic.
Now should I just have him drain and fill instead of a system flush? Last time I took it to the dealer I had them check and they said it looked a little dark and they topped it off. The car is at 130k miles. I was thinking just to keep it safe and do the drain and refill for now. On occasion I do feel it working harder to get into the right gear. Usually in the lower gears but nothing that would worry me that there is something seriously wrong.
Additionally I am buying the filter kit here:

And would this ATF be OK, for a drain and refill it says 4.5-5quarts, should I buy 5quarts if doing a drain/fill and 9 if doing complete flush and fill? I do have the 5speed so 722.6

If anyone has any tips or recommendations, that would be great!
Thanks!

IMHO the best approach is to wipe the pan clean, as most of solid residue sits there, let the transmission drip overnight what should collect about 4.5l and refill.
Flushing will still leave some dust on transmission elements and brings risk of something pushed where it doesn't belong.
Mechanics often do flushing without dropping the pan, what I consider the most important part.
I made a policy years ago about not taking my chances with aftermarket fluids for $10 savings.
Don't forget about new pilot bushing
