I would really prefer a thicker spoked wheel. i know there's not many choices as far as products, but would it be very labor intensive to have this done?

maybe if one could find a wheel from a junked e55 it might work.

my main concern wold be if the airbag will function properly after replacing the steering wheel.

i didn't mean thick spokes......i meant a thicker wheel itself, like the E55 has with the ridges at 10 and 2 oclock.

If you have the right tools a steering wheel swap takes about 10-15 mins.

Simple and straight forward mod.

You never saw? With a 99, I assume you won't need those buttons, right? OK, the guys must be sick of it by now, no thick ridges but still a good feel:

Steve also has it in brown:

If its OEM like mine, its just plug and play....one wire for the airbag and another (2?) for the horn. For the Brabus or AMG one's uses the airbag on your OEM wheel. Remember to unplug the battery before u do it.........

What tool is used to remove the two screws that secure the airbag. I have been trying to remove mine with a torx 30 without success. Is a triple square head the tool to use?

Thanks!

Definitely a torx but I can't remember what size, it was in the 20's. Maybe someone who still has the toll can tell you exactly which.....

Just make sure you leave the key out of the ignition while working on the wheel. With the key out the airbag circuit is shut off and no SRS malfunction will occur when you unhook the airbag.

Yes, 2003 was the first year of the V8 Kompressor in the CL55.

As for the wheel, it is not stock. It is a wheel made by MP Design in Germany. There are several vendors that sell the wheel in just about any color and specification. The best price I have seen thus far is from Performance Products in Van Nuys, CA. www.performanceproducts.com

The wheel is the "Sport" model which has perforated leather along with the thicker ergonomic grip.

They also have a "Ergonmic" model which is the same however has standard non perforated leather with the same grip.

Take a look at:

http://mp-autodesign.com/index_lenk.htm

They seem to make a lot of wheels for various models and years.

The wheel is actually a new addition to Performance Products. I saw it in their new Spring catalog. Performance Prodcuts webpage doesn't have a lot of information about them yet. You may want to call Performance Products.

JYO, you don't need a wheel that's specified for the W210. Mine came on the later SLK's and AMG C's (and I understand SLs) before the steering wheel controls came in - just plug and play. I'm not sure which other model car's wheels will fit but SLK and C definitely, heres are few examples from aiwiners site that should fit (ones with a thick ridge):

R170 SLK

W140 (not sure, need to double check if it fits) - looks similar to Jimmy's Brabus wheel that uses the original airbag:
