1998 E320 BAS ASR light on car won't drive

The past few days (not every time) my BAS ASR lights come on and the Check Engine light. But the car is spitting and sputtering and putting out black smoke and although I can put it in gear when I press the gas the car doesn't go anywhere. This is more than just a light on the dash that won't go off. I'm getting stranded and not sure I'll get home. Yes I'm a woman and no I'm not a mechanic. Thanks for any help.

First thing to do is to put it on a proper diagnostic system. Due to the age of your car, that means using the 38-pin connector under the hood so you will have to either go to the Mercedes dealer, an independent mechanic with an equivalent system, or search for a forum member with DAS who can perform a quick test on your car to identify the failed/failing sensor/module. I cannot offer any advice without knowing the failure codes as there are literally several hundred that apply to the W210 model (of which your car is one). It's going to cost you money to put it on the diagnostic system but in the long run it is faster and cheaper than throwing parts and money at the car.

Best of luck to you.

100% this.
