99 E320 Wagon...No Crank after Dead Battery

Hey Guys,
I have a E320 wagon that has been parked since last winter with a broken control arm,, I finally repaired that and discovered that the battery was drained. (it was started 2-3 months ago) I charged the battery, (it tested good at AZ after charging, for whatever that's worth),and i'm not getting any cranking at the starter....(I considered crossing the starter over but I read thru some posts on here and thought better of it)..... both key fobs unlock the doors and light up the dash when inserted and turned, just no crank ,I can shift it out of park with the key on,,, but it wont crank in neutral or park...Any ideas on what can cause this and where to troubleshoot 1st??
I've tried jumper cables in case the voltage was low, but it tested good under load, so idk what else to try...the battery is on the sunset side of its life cycle so I am thinking a new Battery is coming tomorrow..
My 1st Mercedes and I'm extremely excited at the prospect of cruisin in it
Thanks, Jeff

Take a look at the fusebox and the module compartment located under the hood, maybe the famous K40 fuse of the module has oxidation or has blown, it is a big 40A fuse.

I've checked every fuse and fusible link that i can locate,,,,under the hood, fusebox at the end of the dash board, under the rear seat with the battery,,,,, would the K40 fuse still allow dash lights and everything other than the starter to function properly? I was under the impression that it cut power to everything when blown

Yes, I did not payed attention, you are right. Maybe its is the K40 module itself, they have a relay that allow the starter to engage, sometimes it is the electrical circuit of it that is worn, in this case, you have to open it to inspect.

No power to the k40 fuse on either pole, no power to the red wire that appears to feed the k40 (although that might be the downstream side), not sure what im looking for or at,,,

I ordered the module from Ebay but it'll be a week before it arrives, I also ordered the $220 OBD II scanner from Amazon that will be here tomorrow (for an additional fee of $7.99) so maybe that'll give me more answers (or more questions,,lol) either way, more knowledge is usually a good thing,,,
The Wife is having surgery in the morning, so I won't get back to it before Sat or Sun,,,,,,wish me (and her)luck,,, we need something to go right for a change
thanks, Jeff

Hi Jag, I had a similar issue and it ended up being my crankshaft position sensor, which is a common failure on the w210 - but luckily a cheap part and very easy fix. I've got 2 w210s and had to replace the sensor on both of them. Although if it's the sensor failing, it usually gives some warning by intermittently not starting, and other times starting fine. Anyway, if the sensor has failed, your car won't even try to start. That's been my experience.
Hope you enjoy your car, most issues are well known as it is an old car, and for both of mine I haven't had any serious problems. I also enjoy how easy they are to work on compared to my GMC truck!

NorthernDad,
thanks for the reply,,, it turned out to be a bad starter, but after i got it running it had a misfire on #3,#4,#5, & #6 so i changed plugs and switched coilpacks from side to side which switched the misfire to #1, #2, & #3 so i ordered new coils from Ebay for $50/set. it is now running good and CEL is not on.....I also drilled a whole into the Cat converters and rodded them out clean because i was thinking that they were plugged.....now the only issue I'm having is the traction control keeps tripping and I have to turn it off & on to keep the car from losing power when it's flashing the triangle on the dash...doesn't matter if it's off or on when I start driving, it always trips out at around 30mph, it does that 2-3 times then it's all good til I stop & shut the car off, then it starts all over again.....I replaced the ABS module with no improvement so Idk, must be a wheel sensor or something,,,, it's drivable so I'm going to let it ride
Thanks again,
Jeff
