battery disconnect (car hates it !)
after re-connecting , when the car is started it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders. have to take it out and run it to get it back to normal. has to be hard on the engine. been told there is a tool that can be plugged into the port by the steering wheel that can keep a small charge on the car so no info. is lost on the computer. anyone know of this ?

Your electrical resets after battery reconnect - radio-windows-sunroof-steering angle sensor are all straight forward electrical with 100% no impact on performance.
If I had to "guess" - I would recommend replacing your fuel filter with Bosch or Mann or Hengst (or genuine MB) ONLY - and not some knockoff China made no-brand/store-brand fuel filter. Correct filter is about $50 - and four replacement clamps if the trickster MB clamps are still in place
Your fuel filter has a "pressure" function as well - and your restart problems to me are related to fuel delivery.
Throw 1/2 $12 bottle of Stabil (Blue) Marine fuel stabilizer in the tank for general cleanup.
FYI - there is a "ECU reset" procedure from the cabin that takes all of 3-4 minutes - which resets ECU/TCU to agressive factory defaults - but again your specific description I feel indicates a fuel system cleanup -

installed new bosch fuel pump and mayle fuel filter 3 months ago. just because i did not know how old they were. still running fine. within the last 2 years i have replaced the water pump, fan clutch, plugs, wires, alternator, coolant, diff. gear oil,air filters in & out, mass air flow sensor. still showing the dreaded p301 code.that can mean a lot of things.
