Question '97 E420 Flashing CEL, dies or won't start

Hello All,
I have a 97 E420 with approx 145K on the meter, that will abruptly die while driving, and flash a blinking CEL, along with ASR SKID CONTROL lamps. It will not store a code, but can throw a P0422(? bank one catalyst etc) occasionally. Multi-function indicator reads "engine electronics" when this is present. Leave the car set for a short while or overnight, and the fault clears itself. No stored codes. Have read quite a bit of varying info, many pointing to a CPS issue. It is a well cared for vehicle without abuse or damage, and when running, runs like a ....well, a Mercedes! The regularity of this occurring has sharply increased in frequency, to the point it won't make the 2 mile trip to school.
Plugs are fresh, and everything else works as should.
Any ideas?

"Have read quite a bit of varying info, many pointing to a CPS issue" - if the engine just "cuts out" - when warm - like a "switch off" - then yes you might consider the CPS - the no name knockoff CPS sensors are worth "sh*t" - so consider a genuine branded Bosch like $50.
