What's your E320 gas mileage?

I have a 2000 E320 (3.2L) and the instruments say I'm getting around 27.5 - 28 mpg over a one hour trip at 70 mph. (I know - I've heard it before. If you drive a Mercedes you shouldn't worry about gas mileage.) While I always think about gas mileage I am more interested in how my car is performing. I would like to ask how accurate others think (or know) their instruments are for mpg and also what other E320 (3.2L) owners are getting for their "on the road" mileage.
Thanks for any information.

I've got the same car - 2000 E320 - and I'm also getting around 28 MPG for an hours worth of driving at 65 MPH.

27 - 28 MPG on highway @75 MPH. The best I've got was 32 MPG on the interstate for several hours with cruise control locked in at 65 MPH.

Jeez, I need to make sure I never go over 70 MPH! I have a friend who gets about 26 MPG @ 80 MPH. I think I'll also tell him to increase tire pressures to 36(F) and 40(R).

My 1998 wagon gets 24 mpg, but I drive a consistent 85 mph. I imagine that if I slowed down to 70 or so, that 28 mpg would be very feasible.

29mpg on the freeway @ 72mph, around 20 in the city /hour. My 55 gets 19/15 respectively. The 210 really is a modern wonder when talking MPG.

Just finished a 1500 mile trip with my 2000 E320. Averaged 29.5 to 30.2 MPG during several fill and checks. Avg. speed 75MPH.

2002 E320 4MATIC
damn...I only get 23.9

New tires...
Oil change within the last 7K...
Fair amount of highway/99 driving...
Don't even really break 70....
And I'm not trying to beat anyone off the line everytime I'm at a light.

What am I missing?

2002 E320 4-Matic Wagon
80,000 miles

The max I get on the highway is 24 mpg with 65-70 mph. Are wagons known to give lower mpg than sedans? Does the 4-matic transmission reduce mileage?

Lately, when I start the car with a cold engine, the instrument cluster shows a very low mpg to start with -- something in the range of 5-7 mpg. after about 10 miles of mixed city and freeway driving, it gets to about 11-13 mpg. With an hour of highway driving, it reaches 22-24 mpg. What could cause such a low mpg on a cold start?

The only significant repair on the car was the replacement of both catalytic converters at 65,000 miles (both cat's were shot and were causing severe misfiring of the engine).

The 4 matic gets about 2-3 less mpg and in seattle traffic your 23.9 is decent. Most of the above 27 plus are steadt state open highway long run averages. Our wagon 99E320 gets 27 plus on long road trips with the tires set at 32 front and 38 rear.
Clean your maf ,diy on

Just doing that and a air filter change from www.autohausaz.com can add a few mpg.
atul, yes the wagons get less and cold start the system is running much like an old carb car with a choke it is running rich until warmed up and that is reflected in the read out.

To the 1998 owner---no computer avg on that year model--

Best that I have ever gotten ...

on my '97 E320 was 31 mpg traveling all the way across PA from east to west at a steady 65 mph. Car had 105 k miles at the time.

MPG on cold starts

Ohlord,
Thanks for the info. I got the air filter replaced yesterday along with the Flex B service. I hope I get some improvement in mpg. Also, the tires are completely shot. I will replace them soon. Next, I will try the MAF cleaning procedure.

Has anyone had the fuel injector cleaning service performed? Most dealers around NYC advertize this service for $150-200.

I wanted to test your hypothesis about cold starts and running like an old carb car with a choke. While displaying miles and mpg since reset, I hit the reset button a minute into a drive after a cold start. After reset, it started out with 19 mpg while mpg since start was still displaying 7 mpg. I don't know about the accuracy of the mpg reading on a short term basis. But I've found the average mpg between gas refills to be quite accurate.

Could others please report what mpg reading their instrument cluster shows right after you start a cold engine first thing in the morning? The C-class loaner cars show about 14-16 mpg on cold start. I understand Ohlord's logic, but I haven't seen other cars that start out with 6 mpg reading on cold starts.

Thanks!

Previous cluster always started with 14.9 mpg. I changed it because of the famous dead pixels at the stealership. Now it starts at 7.9 mpg. It does not bother me as real life mpg I get on mine is 18 mpg in city and 25 in highway, regardless of what the instrument panel shows.

This reminds me that I too had the cluster replaced due to dead pixels little over an year ago under Starmark warranty. I'd like to hear of other accounts of new clusters displaying a low mpg on cold start. If this is a known issue with replacement clusters, shouldn't MB fix it? My car is under Starmark warranty until August '08.

Just get a can of seafoam cleaner add it when your tank is about empty and fill it half way, then drive as normal till almost empty and fill it up.This double dose procedure works wonders on the injectors and fuel system, but only do it once a year.Seafoam is about 7 bucks at most auto parts stores, napa, autozone etc.
No use in spending the 20plus bucks on the stuff the dealer might point you towards, seafoam does the job at a fraction of the price.
ohlord
and a heck of a lot less then 150 bucks

Is there a way to remove the torx screws that hold the insert without buying the special tool? It is a 5-pointed screw. Commercial torx bits are 6-pointed. Thanks for any suggestion. OHLord?

i'm assuming you're talking about the maf insert torx screws? in my case i took them out with pliers and put regular screws in there when i was done. oh, and i tossed the torx screws away.
