Too high

You can get Bilstein Sport Shocks (or HD) for no more than $130 each at autozone.com. You may be able to get them as low as $105 at shox.com. You should ask if that price includes new suspension pads, also.

Labor, including alignment, shouldn't be more than $300, so even with the pads, he's probably $100 over market rate. If you find the right shop, you should be able to get suspesion installed for $250, with alignment.

What kind of heavy duty shocks are they? Do they include springs?

Well, I just changed mine to Bilstein Sports here in malaysia, and the cost of the shocks were only US631 for all four. Labour was maybe US50..springs were the avantgarde springs though

hmmm, well this doesn't include springs, i don't know about the pads. i guess i could go to any mechanic - benz or otherwise for this job, right? that opens the doors to some cheaper sources. where do the "sport" shocks fall in the bilstein line? my mechanic doesn't use the "comfort" because they are too cushy, his alternative is the heavy duty.

Well the Bilstein Sports adds to the comfort without taking away the firmness of a sports shock..hugs the roads really well, and yet comfortable to ride on the 18s...
I'm not too sure whether the sports are known as heavy duty, which i think they are...

any good merc mechanic outside of the stealership will be able to fix the shockers for you no problem...but make sure they pick the right shocks for your e-class, as the diff capacities ( E200, E280, E320, etc ) will have diff types of shocks due to the weight of the car

You can call Phil at FastLane (mercedesshop.com), I think he charge $380-400 for a set of Bilstein Heavy Duty, shipping included.

If you live in SoCal, I can direct you to my friend shop, he probably charge you around $100-150 for the job.

The Sport and the HD actually have the same stiffness rate. Just that the sport shock is a bit shorter. With HD, you can use the OEM spring, with sport, you will have to change the springs as well. (lower your car a bit, alignment kit is required...)

You'll probably save $500 at the end

Btw, w/ the way the W210 suspension is designed (independent, double control arm), unless you change the spring as well, you don't have to do alignment when you just change the shock (provided that you go w/ one that have same length as OEM one, and Bilstein HD quality).

Thanks for the explanation Zam2000..now it makes sense! Didn't realise the HD and Heavy Duty meant the same thing!

GalleryVW,

I think that your quote is a bit high. I have a 2001 E430. Last week I got a quote for $350 for the set of 4 Bilstein HD shocks, and $280 to install (spring pads included). I'm in San Diego, so if you are close, send me a PM and I'll put you in touch with the shop.

Check the B-12 Tuning Kit.

It includes Bilstein yellows and springs, i believe they´re eibach.

I payed about 650 Euros for the kit.

thanks sbarsap, how did you know ahead of time what pad # you wanted? (especially with a new set up of shocks and springs) i've read so many threads about how there are different stock heights, and people having to switch pads to get the right height... i worry about placing an order online and having a local place put it all on and find that i'm a monster truck or my engine dragging on the ground!
