The many curving roads and lack of lighting make it confusing on how to get out to the main street. With "Home" I just have to follow directions until I recognize the road.
With the many restaurants in our area it's not uncommon to be meeting someone at a restaurant that I haven't been to before so I just punch it in and go right to the door.
In travelling out of town it is great to have hotels and filling stations easy to find.
My first nav was on a CLK that I bought because the car was available even though I didn't want the nav. Now three MB's later that I wouldn't have bought without nav.

BTW, if you upgrade to euro command, the home function is no longer available. (You can create a home listing in destination memory).

Huh? I don't get it? Why mimmic what you can already see in front of you? A bird's eye view is good. It let's you see much more than what you can see from your driving angle. But, these renderings are worthless IMO. My eyes already see that -- in REAL LIFE!

I will disagree with this. While in japan, i had experience with the actual rendering of the exist and street turns. It's very useful. Unlike america in which roads are wide and straight with clear intesections with 3 direction possibility (left, straight, right). Moreover, you typically do not have many intersection bunched together, so you can get away with much less detail because chances of you making a mistake is low.

However in heavily condensed area like ginza, and (petty much all japanese big city), where is roads are confusing, with multiple turns and intersection bunched together, so see a rendering of intersection and clearly layed out path is a huge plus. You don't really need to pay that close attention to the tiny street names.

Aren't the M-class using Alpine's nav? Why can't MB just go with Alpine on all models? While the Germans knows how to make nice cars, I would rather have Denso or Alpine make the navigation system. Like Krispy says, they are just leaps and bounds better than the Becker crap. And no MOST fiber needed either.

The overlay of contrasting lines and arrows that tell you where to turn is the added value in the depiction of actual scenery. "Turn at Hill Valley Road" is good, but "turn here, between the Starbucks and the McDonalds" would be even better. In a way, it's the same principle of overlaying the virtual on the real for enhanced perception that you can see in heads-up displays (BMW) or in a backup camera that projects your vehicle's current path on the rear view (Infiniti).
