When it comes to cars I prefer lighter.

That being said - the more apples to apples comparison with regard to weight -

The A6 Quattro is 4016lbs. The 2WD A6 is 3836

The E350 4Matic is 3990 pounds.

Pretty much the same when you compare 2WD vs. 2WD or Quattro vs. 4Matic.

There's a CVT multitronic FrontTrak version. Never seen one before though.

well, bottom line for me, the A6 is a close contender for the E.. I was really torn about the A6 V8 vs the E500, when I finally walked into the MB dealer for the E..

I just read that the SBC self tests every 16 brake applications..

Good "before taxi" check (pilot term) to do on the car then, before one drives off with it may be to apply the brake peddle 16 times and then see if the warning error shows up on the instrument panel.. Of course, I'm kidding, but in theory, they could probably re-do the software so it tests after only 1 or 2 brake apps and then this would become a more practical test.

food for thought.

mate u are dam unlucky. From the photos there seems to be no structural damage, but the repair cost will still be massive. Someone crashed into the back of my E350 3 months ago, no panal damage, but the bumper was stuffed. I got a new bumper and bumper rail, which cost AUD$6000. I have actually posted something about SBC failures ages ago under a different user name, that didn't generate a lot of interest though. 2 of my friends had suffered SBC failures but luckly they managed not to crash. They both took delievery around Sept 2002. One bought a E240 in Hong Kong while the other bought a E320 in Sydney. Both of them were driving normally at around 50-60km/h on a straight road while the brake suddenly failed. Luckily they have enough road in front to stop their car using the backup hydraulic system. My friend with the E240 sold the car straight away. while my friend with the E320 got his entire braking system replaced my MB Aust, which cost AUD$10 000.

Does anyone know if thrown SBC codes would be readable by an OBD II code reader with a Mercedes-Benz profile? I'm thinking about buying Auterra's code reader software for my Treo in the hopes of seeing what's really going on with my car.
