Can anyone play DVD mp3's on the '06 E's?

My '06 can not play DVD mp3's and I have run out of options. Has anyone managed to play DVD mp3's on their '06 E-class COMAND?

P.S. Please don't confuse the CD mp3's with the DVD mp3's. The '06 do play CD mp3's.

It appears that M-B removed the DVD-playing capability from USA cars at some point during 2004. Our CDI, built in 7/04, plays DVD MP3s just fine. A friend's CDI, built in 8/04, will not. Many have commented on this board that the later USA E-class cars will not play DVDs.

A pity, IMHO. This is a fine, useful and seemingly inexpensive feature.

I have a 06 e-500 and it plays DVD mp3s just fine in the command unit.
I burn my mp3 DVDs using NERO.

Huh? You want to see a grown may cry? The exact same DVD's that played in my '05 are not playing in my '06.

I am also using Nero and I save the files as ISO data files. What are you doing differently? PLEASE elaborate!

This is getting very fustrating!

My '05 was 5/04 build date and it was fine. My '06 is 06/05 and it defies all my attempts to play DVD's. Short of pulling out the COMAND unit, there is no way I can tell if they still have a DVD unit in there and it's a simple software change.

My Benz parts guy says that there is no difference in the parts code. It wouldn't make ANY sense for them to put in a CD unit because now the CD and DVD units are the same price.

What the living f$%# are these idiots doing?

I seem to get inconsistent information regarding this topic. My command has
the "Compact Disc" logo when inserting a CD into the hu. I get an error message if I insert a DVD (movie). If you burn mp3's to DVD will I not get this error?

Well,it depends....

The differrence between a CD unit and a DVD unit is the ability of the laser to pick up smaller dot ("higher resolution" laser).

For all intents and purposes, if the hardware/software is able to translate the data stream (mp3 files) into audio then the source of the data should not matter.

However....

To play movie DVD's, it requires a video hardware section. Think of it this way, something has to translate the information stream into images and then feed them to the screen.

Cd's, DVD's, hard drives, tape are all just containers of data. What you do with it depends on the downstream manipulation or translation of said data.

So....

If you insert a video DVD, it will not play it if it does not have the built in capability. Thus the error message.

It is the same DVD unit as 05. You should take it to a dealer and tell them that it is not playing mp3s, maybe it needs a software update or something.
I picked up my car on Sep 15th and it is 2006 and it playes fine. Take it to a dealer and let them figure it out. It is suppose to play mp3 DVD.

AJU_E350 Oct 25, 2005 08:32 PM

I just figured if it wouldn't decode the DVD video then no DVD medium would work. I'll try to burn some MP3s onto DVD tonight to see if it works....

Let's be sure here: Are you POSITIVE your '06 will play MP3s from a burned DVD? If this is so, your car would be the first recent W211 that can that I'm aware of.

As another poster previously mentioned, all recent W211s will play MP3s from burned CDs. DVDs are another matter.

My 4,100 mile 10 day old 06 UK E280cdi Sport plays MP3's from DVD yes DVD in my command unit.. and plays better than my old 03 E270 (doesn't freeze when DVD is 3/4 full)

FlintCDI Dec 13, 2005 08:29 PM

DStanley, thanks a lot, now that post makes me want to get the euro COMAND even more. And stop posting, every time I see your mileage I get jealous! :y

Has anyone stateside tried it with any success?

Thanks,

Still no luck here. And I am not a beginner when it comes to Cd/DVD burning. I've gone as far as changing the bitsetting on my DVD burner so burned DVD are of DVD-ROM type, just like the original stamped DVDs.

It does play MP3 burned on CDR just fine. Just the damn DVD doesn't work.

I love flint Grey!

Are you guys putting it into the single slot above the command or in the changer? I know on mine it only works in the single slot, of course I have an '05 so that's probably the difference. Don't feel too bad, the 04's had the ability, with the 3-5-7 trick, to play video DVD's while in motion.

DStanley Feb 12, 2006 03:30 AM

Just bought 50 blank DVD’s, they didn’t have my usual make, so got Datasafe DVD – R. Can’t for love of me get them to play in my Comand, so make sure you use DVD + R and not DVD - R. Also beware of ‘Printable DVD’ discs, the white coating flakes off in your Comand unit due to heat.
