This is what gives Dealers a bad name...

(34,000) miles
Service writer quoted me a price of $320 to change the rear pads, and said the paids were around $120-160. I could have sworn I checked on OEM pads before and they were around $80 for the front and $60 for the rear. I told him to contact me once he had the exact cost.

got to work and called the parts dept there, guy quoted me a price of $76 for the rear pads.

2 minutes later Service writer calls, tells me fronts have 20% left, and rears need to be changed now but not into the rotors and that the rear pads are $100 dollars, i told him i just called parts and they quoted me $76, he wanted to know who i spoke with and was that a discount, i said no just asked for the price. He then says did that include sensors, i said no, he said with sensors they are $100 and $102 to install.

Then calls back 5 minutes later and says sorry I miss quoted the car is SBC so its $288. Oh well they do service the car well, and customer service and body shop is great...

Paid 192.88 @ 19437 miles (03 e320 6/04):

Labor 95.00
Rear Pads 69.30
Sender Unit 12.00
Shop Supplies (?) 9.50
Sales Tax 7.08

Since you’re a loyal customer, mention this to the service manager he just might match or better in light of the “misunderstanding.”

You must have gone to a shady garage. It could not have been a MB dealer! The MB dealers are extremely cordial.....they give you expresso while you wait and watch the big screen. You have been mistaken! MB dealers are extremely competent. They get it right the first time! They never cheat customers like you described! Oh, by the way, the sensor only cost a few dollars each.

At about 25,500miles, I did my own pad / sensor replacement on all 4 corners.

From autopartswarehouse.com, I ordered:
Parts Ordered
Mercedes Benz 2004 Pagid (OEM) Brake Pad Set See Note Price: $55.73 Qty: 1 Part #: N1010-109959

Mercedes Benz 2004 Pagid (OEM) Brake Pad Set Price: $83.16 Qty: 1 Part #: N1010-140487
plus the sensors and caliper slide lube.

Total cost was $169.97.

It took me about 2 1/2 hours. I took my time, (washed the wheels, wheel wells) plus I had my 6 year old "helping".

Now have 26,758miles, no problems. I guess I did it right.

MB dealers and the service they provide can vary from dealership to dealership. Some provide Espresso, some provide MB Loaners, and some hardly lift a finger for you. My MB Dealer falls somewhere in the middle. In fact, I get much better treatment from the Chevy dealer when we take our Suburban in for service.

I'm with you. The dealer would be the last place I would have my brakes serviced.

Sounds as if this dealer has "matrix' pricing in place. This is a pricing structure which marks up the parts by a pre determined percentage over MB suggested list price when the car is in the dealers shop. However if you call the parts dept. they have no idea if you are an independent shop calling to purchase original pads rather than a customer who will be coming to the dealer for service work. It is a BS plan that the dealer service managers think increases the profit in the shop. While it does increase the profit percentage it definitely reduces the profit dollars as well as the work the dealer loses that never comes in as most MB customers are a lot more price conscious than they were 20 years ago and tend to shop around. As most parts people are paid on what they sell they will always quote the MB suggested list as they want to sell the parts. Independent shops are very aware that the local dealers do this and therefore some are able to mark up the prices they charge and still come in well under the dealer quoted prices. Ask your dealer service manager if they use matrix pricing and watch his reaction,it should be obvious just by his expression. How do I know all this?? Read my profile!!
