Here is where I need everyone's help. Based on the spec's below is the price reasonable? and equally important is how much wiggle room do you think I have in the price? What would you offer? I would say not any more then $40K. I paid for a basic E500 with 46k about 28K. So with some mileage & options adjustment 40k should be decent, becuz any more then that for a 3 yr car is unacceptable in my book.

this has been my experience shopping lately:
2003 $35-$39
2004 $40-$43
2005 $44-$49
your miles are very good so factor a little for that....2003 first production year and 5 speed only!!!!!
remember to also factor in what dealer fee they are going to hit you with. do a k.b.b trade in enquirie and get a feel for what they would have traded the car in.
hope this helps.

$43.9k is high in my opinion. Consider this... 2 months ago I bought a 2003 E320 Sport with 14k miles, MINT condition (good clean one owner history) with a 4/07 warranty expiration for $33k (no negotiating, this was asking price and I said "sold"...it had $57k '03 sticker price). Granted you get a V8, parktronic, TPMS and DVD but for $10.9k more?
I remember seeing two E500 Sports in the 30k mile range for around $38k in my search for the right MB, granted this was not the MB dealer but rather an Infiniti dealer and the other was Chevrolet dealer. I passed on these two because I thought they were a little overpriced.
Wiggle room on price...I never consider the asking price, I price the car in my own opinion and that's what I offer. I'd maybe go to $38k on this car from what you said. There is also supply/demand to consider and what part of the country you are in, different markets bring different prices.
Good luck with your purchase and welcome!

mbuskuhl,
I spoke to the dealer today ( previsit phone call ) and he indicated there was about $1500 in wiggle room on the price.
From my findings, any Benz that isn't PreOwned and Certified will be a few thousand cheaper than if you buy it from another dealership.
If I get the car for 41K I will be happy. The mileage is extremely low and its loaded. And Gorgeous !!!
Keeping fingers crossed. In the same price range, they also have an 02 500S, still in warranty if I miss this opportunity.
Does anyone know what is the max Mercedes allows you to charge on your American Express Platnium for the down payment?

Check with your bank and ask about the loan value with what you know about the car...that's the max they will give a loan for. Ask them where that number came from...either the auction values, kbb, or whatever and then offer the dealer that number or even less, you might as well start low. They will say absolutely no, so walk out and say you have another car to look at. Since they want to sell the car, they will call you back later with another offer. Say you have to think about and wait for an even lower number from them.
As for the max on a credit card...my friend did about 20k on his AmEx with his c-class on a new ML.

2003 E-500
Check the build date of the vehicle. Since it appears to have the DVD Nav system, this would indicate it's a late build, NAV replacement 2003 that was probably built in the June-July 2003 time frame. Many of the start up problems encountered with the early delivery 2003 E models were corrected in these Nav Replacement vehicles. If it's not a late build, I would definitely not buy it as that would indicate it had an after sale NAV installation.
Assuming it's a late build, I would not pay over $41k, BUT IT SHOULD ALSO HAVE the seven year, 100K miles MB factory extended warranty.

You may be able to use this in your negotiating, very similar vehicle - 2004 E500 Sport, 16k miles, Certified, MB Dealer in Houston, TX. No bids yet and is at $41k with less than 24 hours remaining, not sure on their reserve price though.

Good luck on whatever you purchase and as long as you see it as a great deal then that is all that matters. Now, the question is what to get with your points on the Amex card....

Everyone here has been a real help and really shows my need for knowledge with the Mercedes lineup. Thanks! The max on the AMEX is $3500. Will check out via the CARFAX when the car rolled out.

That EBAY car is an 04 and in the mid $50K range. Thanks though. Since I have never even driven a Mercedes before are the performance numbers for a 03 E500 accurate regarding 0-60 in 5.9?

2005 E500 / 1993 MR2 Turbo
I would say no more than 40K. Consider that the trade in value of that particular car is around $35/36k. Add on maybe 1500 bucks for the dealer to do whatever it is they do to make the car ready for resale, e.g. starmark, detailing, inspections. Then maybe an additional 500-1000 bucks as a little profit for them.

Double Eagle,
The Car Fax Report shows the first report on 7/10/03 but I dont know if that necessarily tells me if it is a late build. Any suggestion on finding out how?
Thanks, and Tbone that is one helluva a deal. Nothing like it online, on EBAY or in dealers?
