Talking What a deal: 2004 E55 Wheels

First I sell my 02 E55 wheels to a forum member at a good price yesterday. Now, I got a great deal myself... $400 for the set and my friend is shipping them out to me for $70 bucks... $470 for 04 E55 wheels.... I am a lucky B@stard....
The gentleman is ending the auction early and I paid for them already... sweet!

Anyone recommend tires? I like the Nitto 555 a lot... good tread wear. Also, what size rears should I use? I had 265/35-18's on my w210... how about the fronts as well...

man.. what a good day so far!!

That is a great deal! Good find.

I've never been a fan of Nitto's. Not very grippy. Have you considered PS2's? I think they're a great daily driver....good combination of grippiness, wet-road handling, and quietness.

Why is the auction still going on? Hope that no one doesn't bid higher than $470 and then "the gentlemen" decides to refund your money back. Currently it's at $202 with auction ending today.

He cannot end it b/c it is inside of the 12 hour window. He has communicated this to the highest bidder.

Also, I was informed that the KUMHO ECSTA ASX are good tires.... anyone using these. I have heard the PS2 wear REALLY fast... ??

I'm using Kumho Ecsta ASX's on my 2003 Jaguar S-type R (400 hp supercharged) and I love them. They're cheap-ish and they grip much much better than the Yokohama AVS db2's I had on there before. With the Yoke's, the ESP was always kicking in but the with the Kumho's it happens vary rarely. Only when I push it in the corners a bit too hard!

Where did you get your Kumhos? I have a place locally that can sell me 265/35-18 and 245/40-18 set for $586... but I have to go elsewhere for mounting and balancing... seems like a good deal. The place is a Kaufmann tire depot.

Got mine at www.tirerack.com and got them mounted and balanced at Costco for 10 bucks a tire! And they filled them with nitrogen!

Mine are:

245/35 17 - front
275/30 17 - rear

They cost

568.00 list but I talked them down 100.00 because I hated the Yoke's so much. And ended up getting free shipping because they forgot to ship them.

Winning bid $665.01

What a fool....to sell for $400, but a good deal for you.

Now the seller is also probably due some negative feedback, from the highest bidder.

Yeah- the one bidder was jacking the price up...
The highest bidder was a "known" bidder. My coworker is picking them up Saturday. They ship on Monday UPS and I will be getting them Wed-Thrus. Good thing I have an operations department in Chicago...

I think I am going with the Kumho ASX tires. They have a tread rating of 400+... I think these wheels are going to look really good. Although I have not seen pics of a Pewter W211 with these wheels...

Click link and scroll down to see a picture of my car with these wheels.

A little lowering would help as there is too much fender gap, but nothing too bad for my tastes.

MAN.. IT is gonna look mean ! I love this color.. not gold.. not silver.. just right! Can't wait to get these wheels... should be by next week sometime. They get picked up tomorrow by a friend who will ship out to me in GA.

Funny, the guys with E55 dump these wheels for something nicer. IMHO, I think the factory AMG are the nicest wheels... looks tough and classic as same time.

Now if I could just get the E55 motor under the hood...

Angry

AHHHHHHH.... I got my wheels from UPS. More like throw and smash then UPS. UPS packed them in Chicago and put two wheels per box. When I got home last night, one box was torn in half and taped and the other box had the two front rims sticking out of the box. The wheels are screwed up really bad. The two rears took have the most damage. It appears the TISSUE PAPER... (that's right.. they packed the wheels with four sheets of tissue paper between the wheels) did not hold up under shipping. There are black belt marks all over the rear and the lips are dented in many spots. It almost looks as if they fell and landed on the rim edge. The fronts are dented on the face obviously from the lack of packing material and the wheels hitting each other during shipping. One front rim is also dented on the lip edge.

I called UPS last night to file a damage claim for both boxes. I was told a claim representative would coming out to my house to collect the boxes. I said.. "that's fine, but no one is taking the boxes until I have my $2000 insurance check in hand..."

Anyone ever have issues with UPS like this? I can't believe the state these boxes are in... it is as if someone kicked the boxes down a couple flights of stairs....

UPS packed the wheels, shipped and I have them insured for $1000 per box.

I use DHL

1)Lower cost.
2)Have not had problems with damage with DHL but have with UPS.
3)Faster, way faster than UPS.

I think the insurance is usually applicable to the shipper, not the receiver. Unless you are the shipper, insurance may be payable to the shipper, and you would have to collect a refund from the seller.

SWEET.... I am the shipper. My friend dropped them off at UPS in Chicago but I spoke to the UPS associate on the phone and had them shipped.. to myself. Had a friend over at the house last night and he stated they could be fixed. One rear had a good dent but according to my friend, a decent wheel shop will make quick work of this...

A majority of the damage is a result of the wheels smacking each other. The paint is chipped in a lot of areas on the face of the wheels... UPS states the only way they will address a claim is if they pick up the boxes and wheels to inspect. I called my Dad (lawyer) and he said I need to follow UPS policy or they can deny my claim. I took a ton of pics last night to document. My Dad feels as long as the damage is an obvious result of the packing and shipping I should be good to go. I have pictures prior to shipping that show only slight marks but clearly the damage was done during shipping. The insurance on the wheels should more than cover the repairs and I do not think they will replace them for new wheels.

Hope for the best... but I am expecting the worse...

thought I would share some photos of wheels after UPS handling... I realize the wheels were not Mint.. but what the hell...

The best insurance for shipping take-off wheels:

TIRES!

I ship 2 per box, with tires whenever possible. Even if they are old tires not worth running, they save the wheels from damage.

I shipped my wheels from CA to VA, 2 per box, DHL, it was about $70 per box.

Just use a strong grade cardboard, with a partition between the wheels. I have shipped this way a few times for some high-dollar wheels and have not had problems with damage.

Plus, the fact that the boxes weigh about 95 lbs each means they have to be lifted and set down. I think lighter packages enourage the slobs to throw the boxes, literally.

Update

Spoke with UPS yesterday. They pick up the damaged packages and sent them back to the UPS store that packed them. I called the store and the owner stated UPS is claiming the improper packing caused the damage. The store owner (apparently UPS has franchise stores???) stated he remembers the condition of the wheels and they were near mint. He has requested UPS claim personell visit his store to show them the condition of the boxes. He reported.." the boxes look like they got ran over by the truck before delivery." He also submitted the wheels were like new and damage was a result of shipping.

I asked what happens next and he said it is not a question of paying the insurance... but who will pay. He stated the condition of the boxes will clearly show this was a shipping mishap and not packing.

For now, it seems like I will get my money but I still have a dilema... I still need E55 wheels... Getting the wheels for $400 was sweet. Paying $2000 for a new set doesn't sit well with me. One could argue that the money isn't coming out of my pocket... but once I recieve the check... it will be coming out of my pocket.

Josh- Do you still have your combo for sale?
