New York Times quick look at 07 E class

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/12/au...ance-e550.html

has the quick once-over from the New York Auto Show (opening this Friday). The only new bit of data is 'slightly more expensive' than the 06.

As a new owner of a 2006 E350, I was a bit disappointed to read in the article that Mercedes is trying to overcome some quality issues. Have you all had quality related issues? I know that every car has its issues but the fact it was mentioned in the article makes me think this is more than the norm.

Issues with the W211 series related to electronics and the brake-by-wire system (phasing out in 07) consume a fair amount of space in the history of this forum. Take a wander.

Any major revamp tends to have stuff like that happen, particularly with new technology like the brake system.

(knock wood) I've been fairly low-maintenance, and mine is a pretty early build of the first year of the W211. The radio acted up a few times, 2 software upgrades seem to have cured it. Have a strange rattle in the front, they replaced the control arm(s), but it's still there from time to time - hard to produce on demand, and therefore hard to fix.

Lots of folks are plenty happy. My warranty will be up at the 4 year point in Jan 07, so I'm thinking about the new E550 (or an extended warranty)...or maybe the 550i (if I could find the BMW equivalent of MBWorld's really data-filled forums, I'd be able to do better research).

I have to applaud the D-C execs for at least owning up to the problem. As the former owner of an early W211 I felt like I was driving a 50K plus prototype.

A bunch of little issues drove me nuts. Beautiful (for a sedan) but flawed.

We just bought a new ride for the wifey. M-B was definitely off our list because of our experience with the E and the horrible track record of the 1st gen ML.

Were the quality issues address in later releases of the W211 or are they being addressed in the 2007? I am wondering if I should have waited

You would wait forever for perfection as it is unattainable. Even Lexus isn't perfect with their seat belt recalls just announced. Just enjoy!

I had one of the first E-500's that was supposed to hav NAV in it, and this car had a lot of recalls the first few months-engine mounts, brakes, SRS and some others. They decided not to put NAV in these cars and people like me all got brand new E's made at the end of the 2003 model run. I got mine in August, 2003. My replacement E has been near perfect the past 33 months. Only problems have been a small leak in the oil pressure sensor and a brake light switch replacement. I've been very happy with it and not only does it have a NAV, but it will play DVD's as well (but not in motion--which I don't want it to do anyway.) I'm sorry they are no longer providing the SBC braking system as we really like it. Also like the fold down rear seats which I don't think are now offered.

Enjoy your new car and be glad MB is working hard to correct problems.

No Lexus isn't perfect, but closest to it from a quality standpoint.
It wasn't a recall, Lexus PROACTIVELY issued the recall.
It was only 11,000 vehicles affected.

Even in Europe, the Taxi cab drivers are avoiding the E-class b/c of the quality issues.

Mercedes all the way!
it's standard response in the press nowadays to bring up the quality issues on the W211.

i always wonder how bad it really is, and how much it's due to dealers screwing customer's cars when they can't service the complex cars properly.

i've a very early build, and it has never given me a problem (except for squeeky brakes one day, which went away by itself and never came back).

1sicklex: as i understand it all recalls are "proactive" unless the government is coming at your back telling you to do something
