Newbie to Mods

Well..after a few years of watching all you brilliant enthusiasts make mods to your cars i am finally ready to take the plunge. Right now my 04 e320 is bone stock. In fact im not certain what package i have? anyway I would like to upgrade the wheels and put some chrome trim around the headlamps and tail lights etc.
what are some recommended upgrades to the appearance of the car as well as preformance mods that anyone suggest i do. Nothing insane, i am not ready to put 20k into the car just yet.

thanks for your input.

Start with the basics and lower your car/new wheels.

I'd stay away from the chrome headlight/tail light trim. Not my cup of tea.

The ride will depend on a variety of factors: whether you lower via airmatic or springs, how much you lower your car, the tires you use, etc.

In general, if you have an E320 sport, you have airmatic, and you'll have a "more comfortable" ride compared to lowering via springs. Also, the more you lower your car, the "bouncier" it becomes.

well on the opposite spectrum: consider for a moment doing all black. My car is black interior and black paint. what if i did all matte black rims, grille etc.
have you seen that done? i wonder what that would look like?

I love that look. Looks aggressive. Another forum member, Jangy, has a W211 E55, also black with black grill, tint, and tinted taillights. Looks nice! He doesn't have black rims, but the black on black is pretty common on this forum.

Here's my car. Lowered via StarDiagnostic machine at my dealer. If you have the Airmatic suspension, you can have this done. As long as you can find a willing dealer. I've also lowered my car via the "washer method". I did this because I thought the front could stand to go a bit lower after lowering via Star. Other then that, I just slapped on a set of 19's. Gonna do exhaust next, and maybe chip it.

need advice. i lowered another car i had and did not do wheel alignment straight away. my tires wore out very quickly. how does airmatic compensate for the ride height adjustment without messing up the tires.

Ahhhhh, good question.

It doesn't compensate at all. As part of getting it lowered via StarDiagnostic, they align it at the same time.

Now, I went a step further and lowered the front even more using the "washer method". But I can't exactly waltz into my dealer and have them re-align it with washers in the front links. I'm sure that's a big no-no and my warranty would go bye-bye. And I wouldn't trust anybody, other than the dealer, to align my airmatic equipped car. So, I'm just gonna let it ride and see what happens. If I see uneven wearing, I'll pull out the washers......maybe.

But, if your car is low enough for you after lowering with Star, you'll be fine since the alignment is part of the process. Remember, every car gets a different amount of drop when lowered via Star. It's kinda a crap shoot.

Hope this helps

I actually think that the dealer is not the best choice to align a lowered car, whether airmatic or not. Depending on how low your car is, the Hunter machines they use to laser-align your car don't do a good job.

Take your car to a specialty alignment shop, and they should be able to align your car correctly.

My car is on the lower side, and I have even wear after 9000 miles. Pre-alignment, my inner tires were shot after 10,000 miles.
