Is it me but I felt like the writer didn't like that he had to give the car a good review. Anything he could find to pick on he did...and then that comment about the 5 series....ugh. When will these people give up and recognize a BMW will never be a Benz

are BMW 5 series' a benchmark in this segment of the market?

i would consider the previous E class a benchmark vs. the 5 series.

the 5 is just...not comfortable..haha

Not wishing to go against the grain of a biased MB forum, but if you simply look at all car review magazines and summarize, the 5 series has been considered the gold standard in this market segment since the 1997 revision of the 5.
Biggest reason IMO is that the car mag reviewers are more appreciative of driving chracteristics and styling than safety, "sturdiness", resale values and reputation. And the areas in which BMW has excelled in general have been driving characteristics and (more recently) styling.

I believe the new W211 has raised the bar well above the current 5's standard. It will be very interesting to see how BMW counters.

Interestingly, rumor had it that the new 7 series was pulled back off the preproduction schedule and extensively reworked once BMW design engineers got a good look at the current S class. They felt the new 7 needed to be a full notch above the S. I don't think they accomplished their goal.
The new 5 will be like the 7 in many ways based on leaked info available thus far, including general styling cues.
Hmmmmmm.
