Today I danced with one of their eager young turks, who seemed to think, for reasons passing understanding, that I was some young kid who had no idea what I was doing. I tried to explain that I was coming at this having financed all my past cars, and not leased before. He then asked what my age was (say what?).
After a thoroughly misguided tour through what he thought invoice pricing was for an E550, we got to the meat of the question - they had a good money factor, like 202 or so, but when I asked him to send me the terms and conditions so I could decide if we should take the next step, his response was well you'll get that after you join for $29.95.
Now I can understand him keeping to himself the name of his dealer in Jersey that he was thinking of hooking me up with, that's perfectly fair and rational.
But hiding the common business terms of their leases behind an entry fee is just plain silly. It's the business equivalent of asking a customer "open your mouth and close your eyes," and I found it to be fairly sleazy.
"Here, give us some money, and then we'll tell you what the terms of the deal are that you've just bought into."
What then got me to lean more toward thinking of this guy in sleaze terms was the snippy instant exit from the conversation when I pointed out that a) his computation of invoice wasn't accurate and didn't match an obvious source like Edmund's (his was about 3k higher), and b) I actually already had lined up the car for about $1,000 less than what he said he could do.
I was interested in continuing to explore their lease terms given the existence of a vehicle that I had already priced and built. But he wasn't having any of it.
After giving me a standard script about how dealers mark everything up, including interest rates and money factors to make up for anything they give away in the price of the car, etc (...cars 101...must stay awake...), he with almost no self-awareness proceeded to act as if his shtick was exactly the same: buy the car from my dealer contacts *and* buy the lease from me to get the rate.
After insisting that there's no way a dealer would sell me a car for that price without me also giving them the lease/finance (at an inflated dealer rate), he was sort of surprised when I pointed out that not only was I getting that price with my own financing/leasing arrangements, but the car had been built to my spec and I had the purchase order in hand for the entire length of the build cycle with that exact price.
And then he basically bailed on the call with a quick sudden 'thanks for the conversation - click".
A few minutes later I saw his number pop up again on callerID but let it go to voicemail. No message. If he thought better of how he handled it, I'll never know.
That's one experience with fleetrates.com. Good money factor, interesting price, but by overstating what 'invoice' is, they try to frame their purchase/lease price as 'much more under invoice' than it actually is.
Your mileage may vary.
