E-Class pricing
I sell MB in PA. Pretty high volume dealership. We are discounting the W211 cars about $500 (when pushed for it), maybe a couple hundred more on the E500. These cars are in high demand (most coming in are pre-ordered), allthough we now have a few (320s and 500s) in inventory that are available. After the beginning of the year when dealerships have dozens in stock there will probably be a little more room for negotiations.
Of course we are in a free market economy and discounts are going to vary from one dealership/salesperson to another. As a salesperson I value my regular/repeat customers more than the "walk in' or internet/phone shopper that I am less likely to see again or get referrals from in the future.
Availability, convenience and supply vs. demand.

for 2002 E models
E320 (excl. Wagon, Special Ed.) $2,000
E320 Special Ed. $1,000
E430 $3,500
so the profit of selling a new E (W211) is
invoice + 7% = msrp
5% holdback (see my previous post in this thread)
$2000 to $3500+ rebate from mbusa
for a average price of loaded E500
$60000 * 12% = $7200
$7200 + rebate > 10K
for a average price of loaded E320
$55000 * 12% = $6600
$6600 + $2000 = $8600
I think dealer should give us a discount when we buy a new E. (msrp is not right)
(only dealers are quailified to get the money back from mbusa -- I haven't ever heard MB offers rebate for buyers)
the info is based on 2002 but there should be something similar rebate program for mb dealers in 2003.
there is "cash back" on '02 e classes ($2,000 on 320s / $3,500 on 430s) the money comes to the dealer. It is up to the dealership, the sales person and the buyers negotiating to get this savings passed on to the buyer. Through MBworld you are an informed consumer and can negotiate the savings.
There is no money back on '03 E class.
but I don't think there are a lot of 2002 MB car buyers know this "promotion". as you said, it is up to dealers to pass the savings to buyers. by the way, without autospies info, i don't see there is an informed consumer.
I think it's a pretty good price, but I have just begun looking. If you live in California, this place, www.theleaseoutlet.com, seems to offer pretty good deals too. I've heard the 67% residual and .00314 money factor as buy rates mentioned by other sources as well.
Let me know what lease you come across, if you can. Thanks!
