Cracked Windshield

A rock hit my windshield and a cracked it. The crack spread pretty good. Is it safe to drive the car for a few days as the local MB dealer wont receive one for another week?

Shouldn't be too big of a problem. I bet that the rock that hit your windshield was pretty substantial in size. Usually MB glass is very sturdy and is able to take hits by rocks and other road junk. Make sure you get genuine MB replacement glass.

Is there anything I could do to stop the crack from spreading until I replace the glass?

No, you can't stop the spreading, I would just watch out for the police. In our area they will sometimes give you a ticket for a cracked windshield. If they do pull you over just say the glass is on order and will be in in a few days.

you might try a local glass shop

For less than half of what mb charges you can get the same glass with all the things for rain sensing etc. But you will not have the benz sticker in the corner of the windshield. I have used local shops to replace benz and bmw glass a couple of times and it worked very well.. It really is the same piece of glass except for the sticker. All of it is made by ppg. Also they have always had the glass that day or the next.

just a thought

...and then you just buy the sticker from the MB parts department.

Cracked Windshield

I also had my windshield cracked by a flying stone from a truck. the stone hit the windshield in the corner near the post. I took the car to Giant Glass
and they replaced the windshield in two days, they did a fine job. The cost
was 950 dollars which was covered by my insurance less 200 dollars deduct.

Yes,, I use safelite glass they can treat it and it will help to prevent the spread, the last crack was 10" that I had repaired. Normally the windshield is part of the crash protection and helps in a rollover situation. If you don't plan to roll over it should not be an issue. But warning here. The insurance company treats glass replacement, even a stone repair as a full claim. The first is easy but if you lose another windshield you rates could go up.

I have rock chips and stars repaired for about $15.00 and don't claim it. You see many places that say "free" windshield repair with insurance. You can bet the Free repair does bill your insurance and a free repair counts against you the same as if you had the entire windshield replaced. Knowing this I went to $100 ded. on glass and pay out of pocket for rock chips. Had I not done this the 7 chips on my 3 vehicles would have been 7 insurance claims and you can guess what that would do to my rates. The total repair on chips has been under $50.00 the rate hike would have been much more.
