'03 E500 Sport

Faulty Gas Guage??!! $%*$&##

Got in my car yesterday...glanced at my gas gauge...saw that it was almost on empty (1 bar)...next time I looked at it, it showed half a tank!! Figured I was seeing things and I actually don't remember when I last filled up...its parked mostly. 30 Miles later car dies on the highway...still showing half a tank, so I figured I have a bigger problem. Long story short - AAA & 2 hours later, cars at the dealership (it was at night), I'm thinking why don't I throw some gas in this bad boy just in case...anyway, looks like I ran out of gas!!!! F*&$^%# Tank still showing half with 2 gallons in it.

Anyone run into a faulty/bad gas guage on the 03 E500? Seems to be working fine after I filled it up. Will take it to the dealer Tuesday. Can't find any recalls or anything like that on this forum. Anyone seen this?

I've been reading this forum for almost 4 years. I DO remember some posts about a faulty gas guage but don't remember what the story was.

Thanks "Barry" - that thread you pointed me to was useful! Looks like there might be a SAM Module issue floating around on the 03 E500 - quick research shows there was a service campaign around that in 05...trip to the dealer next week!

just reading Barry's respons..i had the rear SAM reprogrammed on the C320 also without any luck.

03 E500 and Corvette

We have had bad gas in our area with sulphur in the gas resulting in many cars having the fuel system repaired. Shell and Exxon/Mobile were the two companies that paid for all the repairs. Unfortunate for me I didn't have the station receipt for my Corvette when the gauge went to 1/2 full and stayed.

Currently the Corvette folks add Techron by Mobile to help clean the sensor in the tank. I add Techron every 6 months. Mercedes does approve Techron for the fuel additive but no other additive.

You might try adding Techron as indicated on the label for system cleanout.

Check it out it might wrok for you. Jim
