Windshield Wiper Replacement - $68

My wipers needed to be replaced badly. I looked and ran searches on this forum for the W211, but the last post on wiper replacement was from 2005.

A lot changes in 2 years, but previous posts mentioned $100 replacements from the dealer, reference to the VW Vortex boards with procedures on how to replace the inserts with $5 Walmart blades, and rantings about stealerships.

I got a pair of wiper blades for $68 from MB Laguna Niguel. You buy them at the parts counter and the service advisors put them on for free (contrary to previous postings I found here).

Just wanted to update for those that are interested, especially with the California rain that's been coming through.

I'm guessing it was my thread that you read, right? Anyway, I've been able to find them online since then for about $40.00.

Benz O Rama -- Yes, I've read MANY of your posts. Learned a lot and glad you and some others post regularly.

(The teenage wannabees on the other hand who post about their entire collections of super cars... well, I guess you can't be too harsh on the teenagers... "Please MTV, PIMP MY RIDE!")

Best wiper blade price

I got a pair of the Bosch 3397118948 blades for my W211 in November for $20.99. www.rockauto.com had an inventory overstock sale. They had 7 pairs but I could not believe they were the correct part so I only ordered one pair. They don't have them at this price now, but, their regular price is only $36.79 a pair. One of my good friends on this forum insists on replacing the blades with parts from Walmart or Autozone wiper assemblies, but, I can't stand the squealing from these low end blades. I think he tolerates the noise because his wife is the primary driver. He will probably chime in on this thread and give me a hard time for overpaying for the real thing. :-)

I continue to buy the Bosch blades. I have been keeping the old ones in case I can ever find a decent refill.

Rainx any good??

I see the rainex ones on line for about $23.

https://www.buyrainx.com/

They look exactly the same as the OEM.

Are these not as good quality?

Just wondering....

E-320 Bluetec
I got the OEM ones from MB of West Chester, OH, they have been really good to deal with online, recommended on this forum. They were $36/pr and $7.00 for freight, with very quick shipping. Part # for the Bluetec is 211-820-14-45.

I'm sure your good friend has come to realize that the cheapo blades ($8.50/pr) from WalMart/Autozone work good and only squeak when doing a direction transition when cold, versus the OEM MB wipers which chatter across the windshield anytime they're cold! I believe his wife does drive the MB most of the time and he only drives it on snowy days since his Boxster only has summer tires on it.

Regards,
paul....

PS: It takes about 15 mins to install the new refills with the help of a tiny squirt of silicone lube.

Check www.autohausaz.com I get most of my parts from them. Very good pricing and fast delivery.

Thanks everyone! Who knew there were so many places to go now for winshield wipers? At great prices (compared to the dealer). I guess I should've asked the board here BEFORE I went in to the dealer! I just didn't want to annoy anyone with bringing up a topic I thought might be redundant.

Thanks again!

E-320 Bluetec
I went on the autohauz website, and they don't list a 2007 E-320. When I looked up a wiper blade for a 2007 E-350 all they had listed was the pump, didn't show any wiper blades. How do you get the part you want, do you have to call them?

Wiper replacement information

Thanks to all who have posted on wiper blades. I'd appreciate if anyone can be more specific with regards to replaceable inserts. Some posts have indicated that inserts available at Wal Mart will fit. What's missing is the brand name/model identifier for these inserts. I've seen AutoZone listed here as a source but I just did a search & they have the Bosch OEM replacements for $79. Heck, that's as bad as the dealers!
BTW, My 1 year old blades were chattering so bad yesterday in a heavy rain that I returned home & scrubbed the windshield clean with "RainX Glass-Care 2000" cleaning compound. This removed most of the RainX I had applied a month before. I also cleaned the wipers with dishwashing detergent. This stopped the chattering for a short while but in a light rain they still chatter just not so bad. At this point the only thing I can try are new blades or inserts. Last month I had the dealer readjust the angle of the wiper arms per P-B-82.30/366a Jun05. This procedure uses a special tool # W211 589 02 21 00 to adjust the wiper arm angle with respect to the windshield.
I'd appreciate any specifics on buying the lease expensive blade/inserts
Thanks,
James

I have stopped using rainx on the benz because of the chattering issue. I went through two sets of wipers, and the last pair chattered from day one. Then I detailed the car up and scrubbed the windshield really good, but didn't have any rainx to put on. Several days of rain later, I finally noticed they weren't chattering anymore. Of course, just to prove it, I put rainx on. This morning, chattering again, same wipers. So, I will clean the windshield again and hope it stops again.

Has anyone else found this with rainx on the benz? Don't get me wrong... I love the stuff on my Jeep.

If by "chattering" you meant squeaking then you are right. Rain X is very good for snow and ice conditions since the dirt does not stick as easily. Strangely the wiper blades stick.

James,

You need any 26" blade refill but you have to carefully take the OEM blade assembly apart to remove the old rubber. There are no exact replacement refills for the OEM MB wipers. Or at least, I haven't found any.

paul...

Yes, I have seen this with Rain-X. I no longer use it. IMHO, the minuses outweigh the plusses.

I am one of the cheapskates that used the inserts from Auto Zone. There are numerous models of long blades that will work. You can cut off the extra with
a razor knife. I did not use the triplex rubber as I hate the chatter that everyone is complaining about. My car was 3 years old when I threw in the towel. I used rain-x because the wipers were driving me crazy. I used a medium price insert (you don't have to buy the wiper arm frame as you will just throw it away). The trick is to LUBRICATE the rubber before you thread it into the aero frame. This takes time so if you are too busy to spend 15-20 minutes per blade, forget it. I tried using glycerin as I thought it would help. I got blisters for my trouble. I believe someone tried dishwashing soap with good results. WD - 40 might work as well. You have to tug the rubber from side to side, like unsticking a zipper that has split. If you are a surgeon, you really should just buy new ones. If you enjoy a challenge, go for it. Mine work MUCH better than the stock ones and the rain-x does not affect their performance.

Clinton, good for you and welcome to the "03 E320 Cheapskate Club" -- I think you & I are the only members so far. As far as sliding down the new rubber insert, I just give the edge of the blade holder a small shot of silicone lube and the refill slides down pretty easy.

paul...

Thank you, it is good company to keep. I believe the reason the refills are snug is that the US spec refills are just a tad wider than the Bosch OEM.
I usually get flak for my posts because so many here have the dealer mindset and (apparently) enough disposable income to hire out maintenance like this.
I have never been able to abide paying for something that I had the ability to accomplish. Some people here obviously can afford to do otherwise and I applaud them for their success. Little projects like this provide a great deal of personal satisfaction and are more fulfilling than mindless television shows.

I thought most of the MB owners afford an MB because of the same attitude as seem to have. But it often isn't only saving money but many things get better done when you do it yourself. Of course one has to know his/her own limits.

Using OEM parts is often the same as saving money but on the other forum an owner was of the opinion that MB OEM blades weren't particularly good.
