Question Getting the best MPG on an E320 CDI

Could'nt find much when I searched, and thought it might be a good thread to start to get all of you diesel fanatics discussing what fuel economy you are getting (good and bad) and how this is being achieved.
I had a 2005 E320 CDI for 3 years and did 70% highway/30% city and got 31-33/gallon - 33 soon after an oil service in summer, ~31 in winter. My newer 2006 E320 CDI is getting me ~ 27/gallon for the same drive!

07 E320 Bluetec
My 07 Bluetec has been giving me 33-34 summer and 32 winter for a 70h/30c long daily commute.

On stock 16" rims and tires (mpg may change when I upgrade to 18" staggered )

E320 CDI mileage

I have 2006 E320 CDI w/ 31K miles.
In a summer I’m getting ~30MPG w/ 70% highway and rest in a city.
My summer wheels are staggered 18” w/ 245 and 265 tires.
This winter I’m getting ~28 MPG w/ winter tires on factory 16” wheels.
We have very cold and snowy winter this year in Chicago.

Oh yeah your gas mileage will change. I run 19" and I noticed about a 10% decrease in mileage.

That's about what I have experienced. I average 30 mpg with a 35 mph average per tank.

I'm managing to get around 33-35 with around 110-120 km/h - and the cruice control should help getting a very smooth drive and saving fuel

I believe oil makes a difference. Dealer & others are likely to put in wrong oil since there are not many CDI's and reading the manual is something they rather not do, nor is bringing in 7 Qt's of the right stuff. They figure most owners would not know or care so pump in whatever they have. It will be good oil, a synthetic no doubt but perhaps a 10-40 or something like this.

Manual spells out a very specific oil grade and weight. I am now running 0-30 w. Diesels are most efficeint hot so any start up cold condition (summer weather included), a lighter oil will help.

Recently had mine at a very well know local european car independent shop. I purposely left the manual on the front seat with the oil page marked with a post-it. Pick up the car and the paperwork says 15-40 syntec. I did one road trip with the 15-40 and my MPG was off the norm. Took it back and had them put in the elf 0-30. Dealer owned up to the mistake. MPG improved

From now in I'll bring in my own oil
