Getting the best MPG on an E320 CDI
I had a 2005 E320 CDI for 3 years and did 70% highway/30% city and got 31-33/gallon - 33 soon after an oil service in summer, ~31 in winter. My newer 2006 E320 CDI is getting me ~ 27/gallon for the same drive!
On stock 16" rims and tires (mpg may change when I upgrade to 18" staggered
)

In a summer I’m getting ~30MPG w/ 70% highway and rest in a city.
My summer wheels are staggered 18” w/ 245 and 265 tires.
This winter I’m getting ~28 MPG w/ winter tires on factory 16” wheels.
We have very cold and snowy winter this year in Chicago.

Why did you get rid of the '05?

Manual spells out a very specific oil grade and weight. I am now running 0-30 w. Diesels are most efficeint hot so any start up cold condition (summer weather included), a lighter oil will help.
Recently had mine at a very well know local european car independent shop. I purposely left the manual on the front seat with the oil page marked with a post-it. Pick up the car and the paperwork says 15-40 syntec. I did one road trip with the 15-40 and my MPG was off the norm. Took it back and had them put in the elf 0-30. Dealer owned up to the mistake. MPG improved
From now in I'll bring in my own oil
