This is madness! This car is cheaper than my wife's 2007 R-350 when we bought it.

This may be simply a regional thing (speaking from West LA; Santa Monica; Pacific Palisades) but it seems as though people without deep pockets are shying away from expensive to maintain, difficult to get loans for, gas guzzling, used premium cars.

Those with deep pockets will simply buy a new car instead of used.

In the not too distant past, it seems like people with moderate incomes might go ahead and buy a used AMG to take advantage of a good discount. They also were able to easily get a loan for the car. Today, banks are much, much less inclined to loan money for cars like these.

Those with deeper pockets tend to have top credit, more assets, and other collateral, and banks will still readily loan to them. But those folks will buy a new AMG instead of a used one.

Although much of what you say may be true, there are many people with deep pockets who would rather save money when possible as long as there are no compromises. Someone with a fleet of cars may just "want one of those" and see an opportunity to save $50k.

Exactly. My buddy got a CLS55 used with 12K miles on it, saved about 12-15K at the time. Sure he could have bought one new, but why?

As I prefaced my post, it's probably just a regional thing. I work in the "industry" as it's called here, and nobody I've worked around ever seems to talk about buying used unless it's a collector's specimen. The mentality seems to be that the savings from buying something used will be made up at the next job anyway. So why buy someone else's hand-me-down unless it's something rare and/or not made anymore.

But the majority out there that do buy used because of necessity are finding funding harder to procure and hence the difficulty selling used cars these days at yesterday's prices. And there you have it with the E63 eBay auction.

Interesting..... but makes sense I guess...... but also it seems the depreciation of these cars (AMGs especially) has been getting worse and worse..... the market? AMG reliability concerns? Mercedes reliability concerns? Less appealing due to cost to maintain? Thoughts? Has to be a reason, but probably a combination of several.....

RE:E63 Sale

Could you post your full options, i.e. do you have Premium 1 or 2, Pano roof, door window blinds, etc. One can't tell from your ebay posting text or pics.

I might have interest.....although you are a bit far away.

i was given a 05 e55 amg to test drive over a weekend (gotta love some used car dealers)...great car but was apalled by gas mileage...probably got less than 10mpg... :-) i think low mpg adds to the depreciation. i bought my e500 when gas was $4/gal and the car took a $10k hit at the dealer during that time...giving me a chance to pick it up a low 20's for an 04 e500 4matic with 35k miles

all gas guzzlers are taking big hits nowawdays

Hi, here is further detail.

The car has P1, P2, door and rear blinds, Keyless Go, Parktronic, automatic trunk closer, heated and cooled seats, interior lighting package.

The only options it does not have are Pano roof and 030 package.

BTW, the reason I am selling is because I stole (not literally) a 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider. As a result, I am paying it forward.

There goes the "not having deep pockets" and afraid of maintence cost argument someone started. Couldn't be further off.

Smart people with $ buy used (almost new), stupid people with $ buy new (to be first on the block most of the time)...

this is a gorgeous car, what a steal. perfect color combo, great options, man i would love to own this car.

my only apprehension with buying a used AMG would be that the previous owner never intended to own it for very long and treated it like a race car without the proper maintenance. not saying this is true in this case, just in general.

Are there any good thread explaining in details about buying a used AMG vs buying a brand new AMG? or just in general when buying a brand new car vs buying a used one?

1. Buying it used will certainly save $$$. But you got to be your own detective when evaluating the car.

2. Buying brand new will not save you as much $$$ as a used one but then again it is brand new?

$46 maybe

Hate to say this, but I don't think your auction will hit $49k. Local dealer just put an ad out for left over 2008 E63s at $30,000 off MSRP - they have 3. Plus they have financing and can take trades.

This is a beautiful car in the right color and a great deal, but a used $50k car is tough to sell private party unless you're looking at Porsche GT3, Ferrari or the like.

Good luck with the sale. If come March when my lease is up the car is still available I will be calling you.

Great deal and congrats on the 360. I think most wealthy people buy slightly used to save $ hence thats why they have money. I can also see where the ultra rich will just buy new but that is such a small percentage of people.

I like to buy slightly used because I love the feel of a good deal, it just adds to the experience.

Nothing wrong with your car. Great car, btw! And here's a toast that you sell it for a decent price. My comment was really about the reason for the huge drop in used retail prices.

But, from what you are saying, everyone who buys a new car is just plain stupid. And only smart people buy used. Okay, whatever. I guess new car sales are, in fact, really an aberration.

I make a boat load of money from each production I work on. If I have excess then I just might go out and buy a new car. The film industry (along with the liquor industry ) always does well during recessions. I'm not concerned and if it makes me feel good to buy new, then I'll do it. It has nothing to do with being "the first on the block."

Why should I buy someone else's car? If it's a collector's car or a rarity, sure. I bought my 993 used. They don't make 'em anymore. But sometimes I like having a new car with warranty, etc.. It's fun. And I pay for that fun. So what? We all pay for our own fun. But I'm not stupid.

And people who prefer to buy new because they have the means, are not stupid either. And the majority of those people, in fact, buy new.

Hey, we all are willing to pay for what floats our boats. You too.

I always like to buy Used (slightly new) as well. I could care less about being first on the block, and no matter how much $$ I had, I personally hate the idea of pi$$ing money away, it's bad enough I bought my car in June when things were getting really bad, hence my good purchase price, however before things got REALLY bad where prices are just jokingly low now. On the other hand I know people who like to buy new for the piece of mind, as I can understand that I guess, I knowingly spent $5K more for my car just to buy it at a Dealer CPO'd, piece of mind....

Good luck with the Sale, that is an amazing price for that car, I could see the E63 selling super cheap in the next 6 months to 1 year, which is exciting for the mere fact of knowing what kind of engineering and bang for the buck you get for such a low price.

Damn, I wonder what happened with the sell?

Not to skew OT, but this whole debate of "deep pockets" or lack thereof is silly. Plenty of people that have the means to buy new get slightly used cars. Like I mentioned before, if I can get a car with about 20K miles or less for 30K off regular price I would get it and keep the change. In this case, I would have jumped on this E63 at that price like what.

I wouldn't say that anyone is stupid for buying a new car, I just don't buy new cars anymore personally and it has saved me many thousands of dollars. It's just preference.
