Successful Coding of Paddle Shifters on 08 E350 4Matic

Hey guys. Good news! If you were thinking about doing a steering wheel swap but were unsure about the ability to use the paddle shifters I can confirm it can be retrofitted to those that don't have the option. Some things I found out along this journey. A. Steering wheel swap btwn 07-08 E350/500/550 models to AMG E63 wheel is seamless. Meaning, no resetting the airbag light, its straight plug and play. It is easy enough that it can honestly be done at home w/ hand tools. B. There is no need for a new hub or any sort of extra wiring, you already have everything you need (minus the new wheel) C. Your existing airbag is a perfect fit for an E63 wheel. D. With instructions from Steve @ MBenzNL, your dealer or other 3rd party programmers with access to Star Diagnostics (SDS) can string code your vehicle to accept the paddle function. This is definatly a worthwhile investment! I suggest anyone interested get themselves a wheel and contact Steve to get the info on how to string code the TCM to accept them. Good luck guys!

Sweet! On my list of things to do.

Congrats! Wish it was an "easy" mod for the pre 07's...

Its pretty sick I really like it. Its just so much easier it makes driving quite a pleasure! Idk if i'm going to post pictures as there really isn't too much to see. However, if you'd like to see the wheel I'm using you can check this link. I bought it from a member on the boards Brabus2ner. Gotta love the boards!

I am Southern California and have a 2010 E350 Coupe with the wood wheel and paddle shifters. The wheel was installed by dealer and was replaced by a non paddle wheel... Is there some coding that can be done on this vehicle to get the paddle shifters working??? Would be willing to pay for the service :)

A change of your data card is needed and then SCN coding in your local BMW dealer.

This card is a MBZ not a BMW... MBZ 2010 E-350 Coupe...

Just a little confused...

Are you saying that the car originally did NOT nave a paddle shift wheel, and you've now added one?

If so then it's not a simple case of adding code 428 to the datacard and then having it SCN coded at a MB dealer, or it wasn't with my CLS. I got the code added but the dealer couldn't select the option on the retrofits page.

I'm having to take my car to Comandonline here in the UK (obviously not an option for you) where they will do a lot of clever (proprietary) coding to get the paddles to work. Maybe you need to contact a few specialists in your area to see if they can help....

Correct on adding the wheel, on the E350 the wood wheel only comes with paddle shifters... You cannot get a wood wheel without the shifters... Obviously it does not affect the car that the paddles don't work but it would be nice to get enabled... So when you say need to add code 428 to the datacard??? Is that what the dealership can do??? The car is still under factory warranty so do you think they could add this functionality??? New to the MBZ world, my previous cars were AUDI, different way on making changes than the MBZ...Appreciate the assistance...

Adding code 428 can only be added by Mercedes, either through a dealer or an authorised agent. Some dealers will do it, some won't. My local dealer would only get the code added after I took the car to them to show them I'd had the paddles fitted (I added the paddles myself to my own wood wheel that didn't have any paddles at all).

When I then took the car to them they after the code had been added they couldn't set up the paddle shift option. I'm not 100% sure that they knew exactly what to do as others do seem to have had success before with having the code added and then getting the car SCN'd at a dealer. However they did assure me that their most experienced technician had tried and I've not heard of anyone succeeding with a CLS before (other successes have been on other models).

Now maybe the Steve@MBenzNL bit that is mentioned in the first thread here (and on other forums) is the difficult part and I guess it's the clever coding that Comandonline will be doing for me.

My car's booked in for the 3rd August so paddles are not working yet, but have been told by Comandonline that I'll get the full functionality including the 'M' option that cars originally equipped with paddle shift get on the S-M-C button whereas non paddle cars get just an S-C (the same button can still be used and it just cycles through S, M, C instead of toggling between S and C).

Finally got the dealership to SCN the car and the shifters now work... FYI, the option does not have to be on datacard on E-350 just the SCN needs to be done to update, found that they did not hook up the paddle shifters when installing the new wheel, once hooked up and a SCN was done the shifters worked... Consider this closed for the E-350 MBZ

This is awesome I didn't know the transition was so seamless, plus paddle shifters are just amazing in general in addition to the stock tiptronic shifting option.

Now we just have to figure out a way to get the heated function on the US spec models xD I suggest a butane lighter =P

Need to resurrect this thread...

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...486d259e0.jpeg

I’m looking for help here.

I have a 2008 E350 4matic Sport and installed an AMG wheel and the big metal paddles ( the ones that say down and up on them)

installation was a piece of cake. Paddles plugged into old controller which had a 3 wire plug that comes off the clock spring to it.

Paddles currently do nothing.

Dealer here in WISCONSIN says I need everything from a new transmission control unit to wire harnesss and more. In other words and his exact words were it can’t be done.

I need some help guys.

I told them others have done it and it’s an easy set up with star and a little scn coding. They want $145 to look at and really don’t even want to try it. I said I could possibly get instructions to walk them through it if they’d be willing to give it a shot and he said ok but $145, Win or lose. Already predicting failure...

Really want these to work.

Need some help please

Oops. Wrong pic above. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...0b1519109.jpeg

I love the look, but paddles that don’t work is a bummer to say the least.
