The one additional thing I did, when changing mine, was to use the corner of a THIN credit card (expired of course) to protect the paint. When you lift the rear edge of the lens you can see the "spring" clip -like on the new one- which, if you just push away from you with another thin screw driver, will release easily. Once you do one it's a piece of cake.

Correct, the MY07+ sidemarkers are different than the MY06- ones.

Thats the way I did it; using a pair of long nosed pliers, I was able to compress the clips (from the inside) enough to pop the fitting out.

Side Markers Installed

Just finished intalling them... took me some time. Had to jack the front and remove 8 screws for the bottom cover and easy access to the markers by pinching with neddle nose pliers and push out. Install clear and line up the 8 screws. All good... Looks great!!!

I can't believe MB would make the owner, or dealer, go through all that when you have to replace a blown bulb !

I just read through the other suggestions: it seems another easier way would be just to undo the 2 clips in the forward inner fender liner and pull the liner apart, enough the squeeze your hand in to get a the side marker assembly.

I had been going through the plentiful threads on this matter here (thanks to all who have contributed). I am contemplating this mod as well but have not actually done it.

I replaced mine a while ago; I need to get in there again to change the bulbs from orange to silver (which glow orange); then you don't get the egg yolk effect.

Yes, this is the way I did it. The "clips" are sort of like round plugs (shaped like nail heads) that you have to pry out. The fender well is flexible, so you can pull it around the fender lip and get your hand in there (wearing gloves will keep you hand from getting too badly chewed up). Pulling out the old side marker lens is very difficult. Using needle-nose pliers to squeeze the prongs together helps.

there seemed to be screws around the whole fender liner, did you guys unscrew each screw under there and remove it completely?

Only two plastic screws need to be pulled out (not unscrewed); one located at the lower trailing front section of the wheel well. The second one is located a short distance up on the fender curve. This clears enough space provide access to side markers.

Iirc its the two lowest plugs. I bought a plug remover tool kit off ebay (less than $10), worked like a charm.

Pull the plugs, pull the liner back a little and squeeze your hand through. At this point you'd be able to figure out the assembly, its basically 3 piece: The lens, the rear housing (which fastens itself onto the bumper) and the bulb which is attached to the wiring harness.

You'd need to slide the OEM side marker back and remove the bulb before removing it. I'd go with a nice silver bulb to finish the look (the ebay one comes with an amber bulb).

Any updates Tchu-?
It's really heck a lot of job to remove the side markers on the 07-09 models.. I broke my right side marker when I try to prey it out. So I searched and found this thread but after removing the two plugs, one at the lower wheel well and the second one is underneth the corner of the bumper (Is this right?). after removing those two, the whole wheel well is still hard to push in. Would it be easier to access the side marker by removing the lower panel with 8 screws?

hey, yea those were the two the i unscrewed.
with those two out it was really easy to get my hand in there.

but the hard part was still pinching the tabs but i just fiddled with it for hours and eventually got it to work

Phew, finally got it installed. Now I have a question about the lights. I bought this kit from ebay that came with two sets of lights, one is the silver and the other is amber bulbs.. but the factory uses clear bulbs. I tested the silver and the factory clear bulbs and none showed the york effect, so are you guys referring to the york effect from the clear factory bulb? I was going to use the silver bulb, but it looks a little dim compared to the factory ones. Now which one would you guys use? factory clear bulbs or the silver (chrome) bulb?

OEM is clear because it used in conjunction with the amber reflectors. The Ebay clears use an amber bulb (decidedly more dim, I agree). The amber bulb within the clear lens creates the egg yolk effect. The solution to this would be to use the silver color (or stealth) bulbs within the clear lens. Either way, total output is less with the clear reflectors compared to stock. It is what it is.

Ok, I got it. I was dumb.. because I reused the factory clear bulb which does not give me the amber color.. now I have to replace the bulb again..

These are the bulbs I picked up:
http://www.jlevistreetwerks.com/Merc...coig23286nutd3

1 x Bimmian Solaris Invisibulbs Ultrabright Edition (B-SOL-.5) = $25.00
Color Electrum: Amber + $0.00
First Set 194/168/921 + $0.00

Hope that helps, they're holding up well since my Jan 09 install. I think these are quite good quality bulbs and they light up decently and visibly well at night, enough to function as side markers, as they're intended for.
