Question Another wood wheel thread

I’m getting an E500 with tectite paint, charcoal interior and the sport package. I’m also thinking about getting the wood wheel. For those who have it with the sport package, do you think it takes away from the “sporty-ness” of the interior? E.g. it’s a classy trim option that clashes with the sport package trim. Maybe my color options affect how this will look?

Not at all - get the wheel!! There is very little about the Sport package that affects the appearance of the interior - it's mostly the exterior, with the aero kit and wheels. The interior has the white face instruments, but other than that, nothing terribly 'sporty' about the interior. The interior is luxurious and the wood wheel just adds to it - also brings out the dark birdseye maple from the similarly-colored charcoal interior...

(you'll see I have an E500/sport/charcoal/wood wheel...)

Great shots!

Thanks for the info. The wheel does look great. How does it feel when driving as compared to the leather wheel? Does it heat up in the sun?

The pictures of the wheel look very good.

Having seen other wood trimmed wheels I imagine the car will look great... I may need to get one myself.

Now then - how about the matching shift knob?

Has anyone seen one and / or have pictures?

I've had the wood wheels

on previous MB., Jag., and Lexus'. I do not have it on the 2003 E-class. My conclusion: wood wheels definitely LOOK nicer but are less comfortable in every day driving. For me, I question whether they're worth it.

Many of us have posted that we thought it was the best option on the car

If you are "newer" to the board..you many want to search on the "wood wheel". There has been a lot said (I think all positive) over the past few months.

Carnaught;
Were your previous wheels wood all the way around, or as the MB unit - only wood at the top and bottom, leaving leather at the hand positions?

We have the wood wheel on both our E500 and SL500 now, but only recently got it on the E500. We have driven in town and on the highway with and without the wood wheel. My wife and I personally find the wood much more comfortable. So, it is an individual issue. Best to try one somehow and see what you think. Jeff

Red face DPBlessing,

My previous wood wheels were just as the one on the M.B. with leather on the sides and wood at the top and bottom. Again I reiterate that im MY experience (and opinion), the wood wheels are less comfortable with everyday driving although they look superior to all leather wheels.

Re: DPBlessing,

Personally, I use the wood part of the wheel to grasp most of the time when I drive, and I absolutely love the feel of the high gloss wood! To me it feels much better than the leather. Having said that in California it hardly ever gets cold enough that it is uncomfortable to hold the wood part. When you add in how much better it looks, for me it is a no brainer!

I tortured the members over whether or not to get the wood wheel. I also could not stand the noice of my hand sliding over the standard one.

Got the wheel- could not be happier. Changed the entire demeanor of the cabin.

CMAustin - great color combo choice. I'm getting the exact same combo on an '04 E500 4Matic (tectite/charcoal/sport pkg). I've seen enough pics of the charcoal with black maple to convince me it looks great, and the wood wheel is the crucial finishing touch....be sure to post pics when you take delivery. I have to live vicariously through you, crazy4cars, and others until mine arrives in late fall of this year.
