Need help with HK sound problem!
H/K Stereo Weirdness
The E class is not really a software intensive car, can you imagine what owners of the new BMW 7 series are going through!

the default fader is designed for the driver not for the rear passengers and the HK bass is not as good as it claimed because speakers are installed on top of your trunk and your trunk is not a good acoustic "holder" for handling the low frequency vibrations.
what you can do are
1. turn the bass to the neutral position
2. turn the treble to the maximum position
3. move fader from the center to the rear (not all the way to the rear, you have to sit in the rear seat when you move fader back) but one thing for sure is the center position of fader is NOT designed for the rear passengers.
this works for me but do not compare the sound quality with the one from home. (assume you have decent equipments at home.)

(I have been told, by another dealer, that a heat shield is needed and that they are on back-order...)
Thanks in advance,

I have noticed a problem while in the Logic 7 mode (ONLY).
Your E320 will probibly do it also, as I have had the car in the shop for 2 days and it can be dupucated on other 2003 cars.
It has also been confirmed as "operates as designed" by MB tech reps.
If you select your fader to the aft most rear and your ballance all the way to the right and listen to a cd or FM in the Logic 7 mode you should hear that the speakers are "cutting in and out".
You may have to listen for about 2-3 minutes. Also if you move the ballance control 1 segment to the LEFT, from the full right position, this may enhance this "problem"
Like I said...when the dealor told me it was operating as designed, I was P***ed. Even more P***ed when they told me the other cars on the lot are going the same thing, I had to go there today a verify for myself on 3 cars that I choose at random...they all did this.
You will get a better listening advantage if you sit in the back right seat.
How many of you hear this?

My E320 is at the dealors for an upgrade to the "gateway" for that system. It seen that there is a service letter out about that. I have the letter and it states that they are having complaints of the system intermittantly powering down....no power to anything related to the stearo system. The letter says that it is an overheating problem. Also when in the Logic 7 mode (more about that later) it was noticed that there was a cutting in and out of the right rear speakers. That was heard in the FM mode as well as playing CD's. We don't know if this is related to the "gateway" or if it just a loose connection in one of the rear speakers. Dealer ordered new rear speakers that lay up near the rear window. 3 spekers come in one unit.
Regarding the Logic 7 (surround sound) system. The information sheet that the dealer has decribed the system as being able to take a 2 channel signal and converting it to sourrond (5:1).
The Logic 7 system CANNOT play any surround sound, either Dolby Digital or DTS, CD's.....again only converts 2 channel into surround.
Thank you for directing me to the thread. The overheating issue sounds like what one dealer told me, but the dealer that had the car for service says (in my case anyway) it is not that. They say "found code D003 electric wake up call of the control unit failed". So they tear up the drivers floor, door sill and trunk to test a bunch of stuff, found the platform "faulty", replaced the platform, tested some more, and then they say "At this point was advised by MB specialty technician to install original platform", and then found another fault code. Now it is true that I told them I wanted the car back, as I thought 3 days was plenty, but to reinstall the (faulty?) original platform seems bizarre to me.
