There is a computer "chip" that, among other functions, sets the maximum speed. You can get other chips that claim to increase the engine's performance, and may not have any speed limiter. The standard tire that the E500 comes with is "H" rated, up to 130 mph. You would not want to exceed the tire's speed rating. You would reach a point where the centrifugal force pulling the tire outward would exceed the forces holding the tire together and the tire would begin to lose it's integraty and fall apart. The sport model, on the other hand, has W rated tires with a speed rating of up to 168 mph. If you did get a chip without a speed limiter, you would need to upgrade the tires.

We pick our ride up today or tomorrow. I understand the E500 sport is shipping currently with the "H" tires and the 130 mph limit. Reason quoted on other threads was that the "W" rated tire was wearing poorly and MB was getting a lot of flak over this.

Congratulations on the new car. Hope you have time and the weather to enjoy the first few days. They are great cars.
It does seem that most people with the Sports version are reporting that they received the "H" tires.

The speed limiter (often called VMAX) can be changed or removed completely. This process requires chip re-programming and is ill advised unless you change your tires from the garbage H tires that MBZ sees fit to dole out to the USA. Liability may also be a problem- we will not touch the VMAX in the USA for this reason.

But your E50K has the VMAX removed right?
