Open the roof halfway to see how the roof window slides in the rails and inspect the rails for any debris clean if needed before lubricating. MB suggests grease part # 001989845110 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $13.80 + shipping) - cost effective lubricant http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...m_term=1161688 , you can also use white lithium grease but use as little as possible. Do not use WD40.

I used regular castrol bearing grease and just globbed it on there, do you think this was a bad idea? I have wiped most of it off and am wondering if bearing grease is a bad idea and if I should buy the MB grease. It just seems to me that grease is grease. The problem I had is that a lot of debris from the air stuck to the grease, maybe that's why white lithium would be better.

Debris getting caught in the grease is exactly why you should be picky about what you use. There's lots of dust and random grime in the air as you drive around. It will all stick to bearing grease that's just out in the wind on the roof.

Okay so white lithium grease doesn't retain these properties?
