Oil change dilemma

Just got an oil analysis report from Blackstone labs. Interesting that they found excess level of wear metals/wear-in, due to the fact I waited for the FSS to indicate when to change oil. In this case 13K miles. So wondering you folks follow FSS intervals, or an earlier regime as what Blackstone recommends (5-7K miles)?

BTW, my car is a 2005 E320-CDI, 60K miles.

The core quetion is whether this would make a significant difference to the engine and/or car life? The more regular (premature in accordance to FSS) oil intervals is surely done at the cost of the environment.

Just for argument's sake; if changing the the oil at FSS intervals will give you an engine life of say 250 000 miles and more regular changing a life of 300 000 miles - is it worth the while? Practically I would think that most owners would have replaced the vehicle before the onset of 250 000 miles since other degradation (suspension components, electronics or even rust) would be more life determining? Even the car age or snobbism factor (you may want 'n newer more modern model after driving the same car for 10 years) may pursade owner to let go of their vehicles before the actually negative impact of the supposedly late oil changes?

Yes, exactly my point/question. Whether this analysis is minor or major significance? Based on your example, is it 250K vs. 300K miles, or half-life that this may impact the engine, ie. down to 150K? If its 150K miles, definitely then its worth changing oil more frequently. But anyone more experienced/knowledgable on this?

I change oil every ~8k mi, and never exceek the 10k mi mark. Over the years, MB has reduced the oil change interval from 15k to ~12k, and now around 9k-10k with the latest software update. Both my 2004 E500 and E320 had the software updated about 2 yrs ago, and the FSS interval has been in the range of 8.5k to 9k mi. You're also running the risk of having gunk build up in the engine w/ high mileage oil change intervals.

The new shorter service interval vehicles no longer utilize a oil quality sensor....

Could you please remove your personal info from the report and post it. I'd be curious to see how your wear metals are doing compared to my 03 gasser. Thx.

PS: How did the oil properties hold up?

Regards,
paul...

+1 My performance shop has always recommended changing at 8K miles. I don't follow the service intervals. I also don't consider the cost of an oil change a rip off or to be that outrageous for a little piece of mind. 200,000 miles with an oil change at 8K vs. 15K at $70 per is about $840 more over the 200K miles or 10+ years I'll drive the car.
