I'm sure you've read or heard that leaks in the valve cover gaskets could potentially lead to shorts in the spark plugs. Well, it's true. I've just confirmed that. The valve cover gaskets were leaking in my 2004 E500 w/ 75k mi, upon removal of the spark plugs, some of them were coated in motor oil, and one of them had a slight short between the two electrodes. As you can see from the attached picture, an oil/carbon filament has been formed between the two electrodes. I've never seen anything like that in real life.

This could have explained the slight rough idling the car had been experiencing. If you see oil leaks in these gaskets, it's time to replace them and the spark plugs as well.
A while back, I wrote a DIY procedure in R&R of the gaskets and spark plugs on a CLK320. The procedure is pretty much the same in these cars.
