06' E320 CDI high mileage warranty options?

Hi Everyone,

My first post! I'm trying to break into the MB family and I've lined up an 06' E320 CDI that has 209,000 miles. It was a fleet car and looks really clean from what i can tell (I’m going to check it out at the dealer in the next day or two). It has the premium package and nav. They are asking 16k for it and it comes with 60 day warranty from the dealer. I normally drive 80 miles a day for my commute so i figure it could handle some more miles on the highway with me. The Dealer does not have any other warranty they could sell me. I really don't want to have to worry a whole lot about it so I’d like to buy some sort of warranty for it to ensure I’m not stuck with massive repair bills should anything come up. Any idea if MB or a 3rd party offer anything that could help me? Am i silly for looking at a E with so many miles? Any advice would be great!

thanks,

Pete

The engine is probably bullet proof if maintained well, but the high miles would scare me.

I know, I know: If a little old lady has only driven it on the highway and to church every day and all that, miles is not an issue..

In reality everything wears out. Lots of moving parts on them W211.

Spend a few more shekels on a lower miles car, and get extended warranty..It sure saved my bacon when the air-struts went South..

Your best "warranty" is availability of service records showing lots of things have been recently replaced.

I should think this car has had several if not all injectors and glow plugs replaced and it ought to be on at least its second transmission.

Generally it would be cost prohibitive to warranty anything past 100k miles, I second NorseWagons suggestion of finding something with lower miles and getting a warranty if you choose. Depending on where you are at in the country, there are still a few 2006 E320CDIs with MB Certified warranty, its all about what you want to do though...its your money.

You can definitely find these with under 100K miles for $20K or less. I almost bought a really clean '05 E320 CDI with 88K miles for $19,000, but I wanted something with even lower miles. Aside from a couple of deep scratches on the bottom of the rear bumper I couldn't believe how clean the car was inside and out. I also missed out on another '05 CDI with 60K miles for $20K that was in mint condition. That one actually sold like 3 days before I went back there to buy it. Both had clean Carfax's too.

Also looking for CDI

I think $16K is pretty high for 209K miles. I just saw one with 117K miles for $17,900. Well cared for diesels last forever but I'd probably be worried about the transmission going soon in a car with 200K + miles.
I'm also currently searching for an '05 or '06 in the 60-80K mile range under $20K. My ideal E320 CDI would be black on black but the few I've seen with low miles are still in the $25-$30K range.
I'll keep waiting and searching till I find it. In the meantime, I get my diesel "fix" driving my '83 240D with a 4 speed manual. It's really slow in the first couple of gears but find to drive!
Good Luck!!

I disagree on the transmission. My previous w210 E300D, basically same 722.6 transmission as the w211 in question lasted well beyond 300k on original transmission, that was with only 2 fluid changes, and those were done after 175000 miles.

The term "warranty" applies to newish vehicles to cover the eventuality that something was not manufactured correctly.

After 200K miles, you can say everything there was, and now you are simply talking "maintenance" if something fails --really, it just wore out.

To prepay someone for maintenance is not financially sound behaviour nor is it financially sound for a seller to "gamble" your car won't need maintenance at high mileages. This means you aren't going to find much that is less expensive than the maintenance you're going to need anyway. Sometimes sellers make money when car owners get rid of car before warranty term is over--there's no refund--but then this can happen to you, too.

I'd just establish a fund somewhere for eventualities and maybe earn myself some interest while waiting.

That's great to know about these transmissions. Do you know what the factory recommended service interval is?
Thx!
