service D and emission malfunction light

Anyone know what's done for service D on a '04 E500?
Also, my emission's malfunction light is on, about whether I've had the emissions system checked. I always use 91 gas, don't know if this was just a preset triggering malfunction warning at a certain mileage.

I only have 53.3k mi on the car.

Trying to do some due diligence b4 I get ripped off at the dealership.

Thanx.

Emission warranty is 8 years or 80K miles. Hope that your car is not out of 8 years limit, MB will take care of emission malfunction if it fall within the warranty. In SoCal, service D is oil & filter change, the cost is about $160.00 if my memory serve me right.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
First thing

to avoid getting ripped is get the codes read. Ask at autozone etc. if they scan codes for free. If not harborfreight tools has scanner for 59 bucks.
Well worth it if it avoids a trip to the shop.
The 8/80k miles warr is on the cats. It might not even be that so the only way to know if they are not the problem is get the code or codes and post them.
There is no set mile triggering of CEL so rule that out.7 year old E500 pay no heed to the $160 service posted above. If you go to the dealer they are going to tell you the spark plugs are due to be changed and your D service bill is going to run a grand.
Easy diy.

I'm going in for a D service next week. (Tues) I'll let you know what it ran. Down here in AutoNation country there is no competition between dealers on service as most of them are AutoNation owned (2 exceptions come to mind out of about 7 in the immediate region)... Basically the old A,B,C,D, services have evolved into A and B's alternating, with the occasional extra service added into all the "check" and "adjusts" and "look ats" and "tightens" on the list that pad the needed yearly "Lube Oil and Filter".

I believe a D/B service is about $550.00 down here. It was at least 20% less costly (!) on Long Island where the MB dealerships were all independently owned, with one or 2 owners owning 2 stores each. There were more MB dealerships in a smaller area with much more scrapping and competition between them... Down here there's much more space between dealerships, but they're all palaces owned by AutoNation. I wish they competed between themselves for service & sales, but apparently they don't... But they ARE very well run & staffed. Better than the L.I. stores in that respect.

Thanks for your reply.
I called the dealer I purchased from and had taken back for service a few times before. They said that it involved alot of 'inspections and checks' and oil & filter change. They were also saying that the pollen/carbon filters under the glove compartment as well as in the engine bay will need to be changed at an additional cost. I think it's just a glorified oil change for $289.

The pollen/carbon filters will run about $130.

They also recommended the air filter be changed for about $160, which I told them I have K&N's in already and don't want them changed.

They were also pushing a brake fluid flush for about $150-200 too.

Itemized repairs....geez.... I may for-go the brake fluid flush.

As far as the emissions light goes, I do fall in the 8 year period...so hopefully if there's a bad cat that needs replacing, they will cover that. I drove about 11k miles in 2yrs (since my last service at the dealer in 2/2009). I have another car used to put on all the miles.

I put about 700mi in 3 days earlier this week, on a business trip to Vegas. Car performed & drove well on the 15 fwy. The PS2's are great handling....even though I think I have some flat spots on the tires from sitting in the garage too long at a time.

On NV gas, I got 27-28mpg....seems to run better than the crappy CA gas that has the fuel additives for smog control.

I plan to take the car in next Monday or Tuesday....we'll see what happens.

If it wasn't for the emissions malfunction light, I wouldn't have bothered taking it back to the dealer.

I mentioned to them about the foul odor coming from the vents when I turn on the a/c also and they said that the pollen filters should fix that. I wonder if they even changed that the last time around.

Thanks.

Thanks for the information. I used to be more hands on with the DIY car repairs. I may start looking into doing that in the future, but right now....I'm not too sure I want to mess with the work myself.

8yr/80k on the cats is good to know. Maybe the costco gas I've been putting in isn't the best for the car.

The service advisor I dealt with told me to look at the "B" service details....I guess the D is the same as B service. He quoted me $289 along with other add-on work which tack on to the $. A la carte!!! Crap....I feel like I'm getting ripped off.

I yelped the dealership and they had crappy service ratings.

I had a bad experience calling in to them this morning as well, but the service advisor called back and apologized....which I'm going to accept and let them try to do things right.

We'll see how it goes. At least he's gonna gimme a C rental.
