7G-tronic transmissions now - sucks for us

Starting in the fall, our E class (among others in the lineup) will be getting 7G-tronic tranmissions, which improve fuel economy and acceleration. Those of us already with our 5-speed transmissions are stuck with them.

Crap.

Dude, this seems pretty low on the list of things to get disappointed about. Enjoy your car, it's one of the best around regardless of how many gears it has!!!

If I had an E500, I'd rather have the 5 speed, these transmissions are so complicated, I'd rather have a proven box then a brand new one they were working the bugs out of.

Yeah, that's true - all I need is ANOTHER bug to work out on this car. God knows I have enough as it is!

Why do you say you are stuck? Did you forget you can sell your car, and buy the 7G model?

Sounds nice but I would not want to be the lab rat.

I am not doubting the credibility of the article but I dont understand why my issue of AutoSpies (same Volume, Date, etc) did not have this article. Very strange.

If you look at the german car fans website. this has been officially announced by Mercedes. It is not a rumour at at this point.

Yeah, it is in a current issue of Autoweek as well. The only thing ambiguous is just when the E500 will get the 7 speed. Sounds like the E is down line and there is some reference to the 7 being added across the board once supply is available.

It would be really interesting to know if this slight improvement in fuel economy will be enough to get the gas guzzler tax dropped on all of the 500 engines, whether in the SL, S, or E. If so that would be a real impetus for getting it out sooner rather than later - especially with the current currency problems and exchange rate fluctuations making exported vehicles from Germany less profitable for Daimler Chrysler.

we'll all know soon enough when the E will get the 7G, and I for one wouldn't want one from the first 3 months of the production run. I'm picking up my new 03 E500/Sport on Thursday and at least I feel most of the first year bugs have been smoothed over. I plan to drive it till the dust settles on the 04 and when the forum is convinced that the 7G, the NAV and the voice command are all working, I am ordering an 04.....if the bugs get worked out in time........or an 05. And if the 7G does get the E500 out of gas guzzler range, I'm sure it will be offset by a modest overall price increase. So....enjoy!!!

enjoy your car

7 gears or 5 gears does not matter -- my wife knows nothing about it. especially it is automatic. (actually, 2 gears for her, accelerator and brake. )

A brand spankin' new fresh design tranny scares me more than a brand new engine. There's a HELL of a lot more to go wrong with a transmission and they're a hell of a lot harder to put right than an engine if they do break. Let someone else be the labrat and be glad you got a 5 speed! Hopefully these won't be a complete disaster, but I'm sure they'll have their teething problems.

I believe 7 speeds is optional, so you still can select 5 speeds for your new car. I think 7 speeds is a marketing trick. Cadillac still uses 4 speeds transmission and 87 octane engine showing better fuel economy at comparable HP.

It's more than just gas mileage though. More gears should provide better use of the engine's power. It'll probably be a little quicker 0-60.

The new 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission will be a standard feature

The new 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission will be a standard feature of the E 500, S 430, S 500, CL 500 and SL 500 models from autumn 2003, replacing the five-speed automatic version currently fitted.

The newly developed seven-speed automatic transmission reduces fuel consumption in the NEDC driving cycle by as much as 0.6 litres per 100 kilometres (depending on the car), increases acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h by up to 0.3 seconds and allows significantly quicker intermediate sprints from 60 to 120 km/h.

same article from the source (MB) here .......

http://www.daimlerchrysler.com/index...3/t30514_e.htm

I am trying to find and will post another article I found mentioning the torque rating of this tranny and that later in the year a beefed up version would be built to handle the torque of the AMG and V12 engines. mp

here is the german version of the article I mentioned:

01.05.2003 7-Gang-Automatik ab Herbst 03 !
---------
--------
NM is the metric measurement for torque. this article says that the first version (fall 2003) of the 7G will handle 700NM which works for all the normal 5 liter V8s. It then says that in May of 2004 a 1200NM (high torque) version should be ready for release and that will be able to handle the power of the V12 and AMG engines.

We shall see
:o :p

Does anyone know how to translate the savings noted of 0.6 literes/100 kilometers in to miles per gallon?

By my calculation (after doing some conversion), this means that the current 16/23mpg would increase to 16.7/24.4mpg. Calculation:

.6 litres / 100KM = .255g / 100 miles
If the car currently gives 23mpg, then it uses 4.348g to go 100miles. Now, it would use only 4.093g for the same 100miles, which translates to 24.4mpg. Did same calculation using 16mpg for city miles.

Question: would this be enough to avoid the Gas Guzzler tax?

Thanks for the info. I do hope that it avoids the gas guzzler tax, as that would save a decent bit of change on my lease (only $1000, but since that can't be residualized...)

Its ridiculous that you have to pay a Gas Guzzler Tax on a mass produced car like the E500. Then again its ridiculous that a $50K+ E320 has the same old low HP 3.2L 6. And its even further ridiculous that you can't get a NAV system on any of them.

well, the e500 tax isnt based on how many cars they make, its based on tge milage it gets, also, the 320 costs less than last years model, and has much more equipment, and safety wise ts better

on the DC website there is an article dated 5/14 from MB that the 7G will be on all '04 E500s. My dealer emailed me yesterday and said that production of '04 E's and AMG E55's will start first week in August and that command is set to go. I'm still waiting for him to get info on Nav.

nice

I like to hear that your dealer said they will begin building soon for the 04 E's since my dealer says that mine should get here in mid to late Aug. since its the FIRST 04 E 500 to be ordered from the dealership. I hope it gets here around that time. and the 7G tranny would be a plus but i dont really care much bout it.
