Thumbs down Passenger seat rocking...dealer wants $1900 to fix it!

So I got a call from my parents who live a state across from me, they have a 2008 E320. They said that the passenger seat has been "moving/shifting" around a little when starting and stopping for the past week or so. They told me that it's not like the seat is unbolted from the floor, but it moves enough to make them feel really uncomfortable with having a passenger in the front. So yesterday they took it to the dealership and thought it wasn't a big deal. The dealer called back and said it would be $1900 to fix!

My parents are not really car savvy and I am getting third hand info which isn't the best. From their understanding, the dealer said that the seat frame is bent and will need to be replaced. I've never heard of a seat frame costing $1900, maybe if you replace the entire seat, but not the frame itself. Plus labor can't be driving up the cost because I can take 1 seat out in 30 min tops.

I'm a car guy and have always worked on my own cars (04 Cobra, M3, etc...) but I do not live close by and I can't look at it for them. Is this a common problem and what is done to fix this? What would cause the frame to bend in the first place, it's not like we have 500lb people laid out in the front seat?

I've never heard of the frame bending either. I am hard pressed to believe that a bent frame would cause the seat to rock anyway...

My advice would be to shop around for a good indy shop in their area and have them take it there for a quote.

Have they tried:

Changing the CDs to some Strauss waltzes or Perry Como? Just stay clear of Manilow: "I write the songs that make the whole world puke!"

Seriously, though, my old Porsche has seat track problems because a previous owner high-centered it on a parking lot concrete barrier and bent the area under the driver's seat up a bit more than an inch. Maybe the dealer was talking about bodywork costs.

Bent Seat Frame

Yes, that's exactly what it costs. I have a driver's side bent seat frame on a 2006 E350 and the quote from the dealer was $1,875. The part alone, 211-910-35-36 costs about $1,200 plus labor involved arrives at the above price. Unbelievable!!!! It's a crime. Nothing can be done about it. I haven't been able to find the part used either. The part is sold together with the motor also and not sold separately. No idea how my frame got bent. My car was also under a certified MB warranty which would NOT cover the frame! It only covers mechanical issues which in my mind something mechanical like the motor bent the frame! When I try and move the seat it just pivots from the one side and doesn't move on the other.

I took it to another small mechanic shop and they called their connections with the MB dealer. Same story. That's how much the part costs!

I've explored buying a whole seat used for just the frame and motor but it just starts to get risky if the parts don't work or if it can't be pieced together.

That should totally be covered under your vehicle's factory warranty. Is the vehicle under 50,000 miles / purchased new? PM me the vin and i'll look it up if you don't know. Did they take it to an MB dealer? Get me some more info and ill ask one of my service advisers about what is going on.

Hi Texas,

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, my warrantly has expired since then. Expired in May. The service advisor working on it says they tried putting several different part numbers in to get it covered for the warranty and it wouldn't work. I also have many car dealers as clients and I talked to a former Mercedes service manager and he agreed that the framing isn't covered under the warrantly. I also called MB HQ customer service and they concurred and never got back to me regarding my complaint. Partly because my last service was NOT at a MB dealership. I bought it as a used certified mercedes from an MB dealer. I think my options are limited at this point. I think my motor is ok but the part is only sold together. I've been trying to find a used part or entire seat. There is a frame only on ebay without the motor but I don't know how hard it would be for a technician to just replace that part.

Hey, I'm really sorry that happened. Is the movement front to back or side to side? I have had the same thing happen to me (Chevy front passenger seat) a service tech also told me that my only option was to replace the seat. $1,900 doesn't seem like that much for a Mercedes seat, My uncle just had an alternator go out on his 2008 E class and it cost him $1,100 and that part should only cost like $200-$300 on a normal vehicle.

Hi Texas,

The movement is restricted from front to back. The seat will go up and down and recline so it would seem the motor is fine unless there is a different motor in the frame for going back to front. Do you know? This will be my last Mercedes! Can't believe how much they are to fix. Even my Lexus wasn't this much and it never had anything wrong with it until there was 150K miles on it.

Thanks konigstiger,

There are part #s within part #'s is what the MB dealer told the technician that looked at my car. The part # on the frame was still 910-35-36 last month which was the same as the part # referenced on the MB paperwork in May. It's all very confusing. The diagram is great. Is this for an E350 2003-7? Helps in trying to understand what I need to buy I guess.

Is the part number you referenced actually 000-910-966-36? Just want to make sure it's not a typo as all the part #'s I've seen relating to this with Mercedes has two digits for the third set of #'s (966). Thx!!

Konigstiger,

This is great information. Thank you so much. I have a 2006 E350 also so these diagrams are a perfect match to what I need. Have a great day!

Ok sorry I have another question to anyone that may know. My driver's seat motor works to move me up or down and it also reclines. The frame is bent on the right side track and when the seat makes an attempt to move back and forth from front to back the left side moves but not the right as it's bent (so it pivots). Are there two separate motors on the right and left side that work independently to move the seat from front to back? I can't tell entirely from the diagram. I'm trying to determine if my motor is also bad as I know of someone that has the correct frame but no motors with it. I'm thinking my motors may be fine and the bent frame is simply stopping the movement. It's a gamble for me to just buy the frame from this person I don't know but if there are not two independent motors for the left and right side then I think my motor is fine. Thoughts?

3 motors in total see diagram; 60 = height adjustment, 70 front to rear (only 1) and 80 angle. All motors should be fine.

Perfect! I could see the motors in the diagram and was hoping they were all for those separate functions. After doing research last night, I had all but confirmed there was only one motor for front to back motion and even found some sites where I could just buy the motor if it really was bad. Thanks again neighbor. I live in N. Scottsdale too. Enjoy the heat!

I found a fix

yes this is an old thread but I had the same problem. After analysis I found a blown front right plastic pivot bushing. I removed it with the seat still in the car and turned a nylon one on the lathe. 30 minutes later problem solved.

If anyone has this problem I'd gladly turn you a bushing for $30. Just measure the hole diameter and bolt diameter and space the bushing fits in. Mine was 21.5mm by 12mm by 7mm

It's not a retaining ringed bushing I found that unnecessary. It's trapped after assembly so what's the point of working that hard ? ;0)

Good on you Dirk.

The whole time I was reading that thread I was waiting for someone to take the seat apart to see what failed in the seat frame. Thanks for taking the time to post.

The offending part

Thank you John!

This little trouble maker causes big problems. For Mercedes to say that the entire seat base is disposable because of this bushing is criminal.

There's some chunks missing and the center is gone completely I'm guessing it was a Delrin type of Acetal material from the white chunks I found but can't be sure. All I know is there's something missing. It almost seems like the grease reacted with the bushing material and it degraded. If I knew what was in there I could possibly build a mold and start molding these the trouble is marketing them how would people in need know they exist?

Either way if someone feels enthusiastic enough to take apart a good seat and measure one up accurately and show me what it looks like I would at least be able to know what we are up against. Or like I said before I will turn some for anyone that needs some.

I had my driver's side out last year when I replaced the torn tex/leather cover. While I was in there I replaced the seat pad as well.

It would seem to me that junk yards would have scads of these seats laying around.

For the adventurous, swapping the frame out is doable and not all that fiddly.

Do you have a video, or can you provide instruction on how to remove the damaged and install the new part?

Nice to see this resurrected from the dead. Same problem on my W210. Now I know where to look although I am not looking forward to pulling the driver's seat out of the car again...

I just brought my E350 in for the same reason drivers set won't go back and forth they took it apart and told me it was caused by dog hair and they don't think that the warranty will cover it
they said the motor broke however it moved onto the right side but not the left how is that possible?
