drb,

you seem to be the first one of the forum members that will be getting the new Navi system. We await your feedback on the features in 3 weeks.

It looks like we will all have to wait until you take delivery to find out about the Nav system. I sure can not find anything on the US version. It is just more crazy thinking by MBUSA. All of this fuss about the Navigation and they still have not put out any information or specs.

drb...are those the contact sport Michelins? What would be the model of the "non-soft" Michelin tire. I am trying to get MB to put Michelins on my car instead of the Contis. I don't want the quick wearing tires however.

Ed

added: I hope you are getting a "newly built" car and not a "rebuilt" unit

newly built E news

etenn, from this forum I understood many were unhappy with the conti tires (me included). They were noisy and bumpy for the first 2K miles. Now they are smooth. When the dealer called I asked if he would substitute the Michelin, to which he said they carried the MXV4-Pilot and Goodyear. The Pilot model is better than the conti according to
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/touring.jsp

I do not know much of anything about tires, so I cannot answer your question with any authority.

Yes, this is the newly built model.

Concerning the tires, I had thought that people were getting the Michelin Pilots in replacement of the stock Conti's. The MXV4 is a touring tire, and if you have the Sport package, it will not match the sporty nature of the car.

Please see the Tire forum on this site for more details about tire choices.

And yes, it is totally amazing that they have no information about the NAV at all. It would be nice before one ordered it to have some details. I would assume, and I'm only assuming, that the unit should be very similar to the DVD based NAV in the 2003 S and CL.

I just called my saleman to ask about the replacement car that I had placed the order three weeks ago. He told me that my car has not been ordered yet because there is no production date for the replacement car yet. He is waiting for production date before he can places an order.

I don't know what are they doing, but i suggest you guys call your saleman to make sure that your car has been ordered. This is so ridiculously.

The salesman says nearlyall Es are arriving with the Michelin Pilot tire... at least at his dealership.

My dealer placed the order for my replacement E500, one of about ten replacement at this dealership, on May 8th. He faxed me a copy of the NetStar order the next day.

On May 21st he emailed me that my car is scheduled for production in the first 10 days of July (M-B schedules production in decades of a month) and that they expected it to be delivered to their dealership in Southern California 45 days later - about the end of August.

Not placing an order until a production date is set seems like putting the cart before the horse.

Good luck!

I am still dumb as possible about tire models. I have the ContiTouring Contact CH95 on my car. They really suck. If you look at the survey drb posted the Continentals are dead last (where they should be). The do list them as "CT95 which I assume is the same tire.

Also on that survey there are three michelins MXV4-V (6th highest rated), MXV4 (12th rated) and the XGT4 (20th rated).
What the heck is the difference between these models.

Wish I knew something about tires. I do know that everyone seems to have different opinions about them.

Etenn, tires are a tricky matter. It firstly depends on you, the driver, and how you drive the car. I noticed you live in Washington State. Will you be using the car at all during the winter, and if so, will you be putting on snow tires? That would be the first question to ask, as you can then open uo your options to get a "summer" tire. If you need an all-season, then I would suggest looking in to the Michelin Pilots. Great tire, and come highly recommend by several forum members, and are even OEM on the SL.

Check out here for Ultra High Performance All-season tires:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/uhpas.jsp

For less sporty tires, check out the Grand Touring All-Season category, which shows the Conti's in a much more favorable light (the real CH95's):

My dealer has just informed me that the Wood/Leather Steering Wheel to match the Sport Package cannot be ordered anymore. Anyone know if this is fact? I did not ask for break in price. The NetStar just rejected the order for this steering wheel.

Does not make sense, but if anyone knows where I can get one, please let me know.

The one that was for sale here is no longer.

My car is scheduled for delivery the end of August.

I'm not sure about it's availability. I have one on my current E500, and wanted them to order one on my new car. The dealer said they would just switch out the steering wheel when the car gets here. I thought they were just being cheap; perhaps that is the only way I can have my wood wheel!

Did you buy the one for sale by E320? Someone bought it yesterday for $400. delivered. If not, maybe you should pm him in case the deal he has falls through.

Yes, that is the case....but exceptions are being made for the replacement cars. Your salesperson needs to call MB and they will give the approval to add the wood wheel (once they know its for a replacement E).

What is NetStar

NetStar is Mercedes-Benz computer ordering system that links dealers with manufacturing.

An update on the Continental/Michelin tire on the the replacement E500.

My dealer( General Manager) just contacted me and advised he talked directly with "distribution". He was advised that the "only" tire being shipped on the non-sport E500 is the Continental CH95 (which I really don't like). "They cannnot be changed!" (the quotatations are the dealers quoting MBUSA.)
Sports packages are being shipped with Michelin Pilots and some Goodyears.
Some E320's have Michelin as well as Continentals.

Anyone disagree that this is the way they have been shipped? Maybe all the Michelin Pilots we have discussed were on Sports Models? I did not go with the Sport as I did not care for the black wood trim. I recall that after the options there was less than $1,000 difference between the sport and non-sport.

Wood Wheel

When I asked about the wood wheel for the E320 I was told by dealer that it is not compatible with the NAV system i.e. wiring/connections

What in the world would a wood wheel have to do with the Navigation system? I can't imagine there being wires in the steering wheel that go to the Nav System. Only way I would believe that is if the Nav system was actually controlled off the steering wheel/and or column like Volvo's setup (which it isn't).

Anyway, the salesperson just called and said the Wood wheel is in the system (Netstar) and on paper.....in combination with Nav.

So, I think your dealer is either full of crap or doesn't know what they are talking about.
