URGENT: NHTSA Opens investigation into fuel leaks on the W211 E Class

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...leaks-e55.html

This involves all W211 E Class cars as they have all had problems with leaking fuel sending units and tanks. The National Highway Transportation Safety Authority has a CURRENTLY OPEN INVESTIGATION in regards to these problems and we need anyone that has not yet filed a complaint with NHTSA to do so ASAP.

Mercedes is finally being forced to answer to this problem and the NHTSA needs to know the scope of this problem. There is a good chance that a safety recall may come from this so action is needed from anyone that has not reported their failures yet.

COMPLAINTS CAN BE FILED HERE: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
Reference NHTSA Action Number: PE12001.

Unfortunately an E55 is not a E500 but hopefully it will apply to all applications of the same installed parts.

BBBSS 03-03-2012 05:04 PM

This is for all W211 E Class cars, including but not limited to the E55 AMG. They use the same sending unit that cracks/leaks.

moosejaw 03-04-2012 02:37 AM

There have been over 50 documented complaints from E Class owners acc to NHTSA
Im surprised this thread hasnt been viewed a lot.
The problem is very serious and occurs in all E Class not just the AMGs

kkanuck 03-04-2012 10:31 AM

Are CDI's prone to this too?

moosejaw 03-05-2012 05:25 PM

Im not sure if the CDI model is affected?
Do you smell gas after a fill up
Can you check under the seat (drivers side) , remove the access panel to see if there is any sweating of components related to the fuel sender?

jcat 03-06-2012 08:35 AM

I only get a gas smell once in a great while on my 06 e500...never at the same fuel tank level etc., i've read the threads on these problems but my car doesn't seem to do it. I don't believe it's had the sending unit or tank replaced as I saw the service records. Do we know if this applies to all w211s or just certain years/prod. dates?

moosejaw 03-06-2012 10:04 AM

All W211's are affected but the ones ive seen complaints are on V-8 models, no 6 cylinders or CDIs. In fact these are happening to the new W212s from what i understand.
If you get a gas smell, write a report please. It will only get worse

well i'm pretty sure i have this problem too (v6). when fill up all the way, a gas smell comes from the rear driver's side area when the windows are down (goes away after it drops a little below 3/4s). then recently the fuel tank light started flashing and the red "check gas cap" warning came on. my indy shop changed the gas cap first saying it was only $30 so worth it if that was somehow the actual problem. he said if not, he's been seeing problems with the fuel sending units and then that would be the cause.

This is truly the first time i've heard this for a six cylinder car.....Hmmmm this could get expensive for MB

For any one questioning they have symptoms or not, please see my rundown explanation on the C32/C55 Section which can help isolate your problem.

I started a thread regarding this issue a couple of weeks ago. I and a handful of others have filed the complaint. But we need more voices (complaints), in order to get justice done. So please file a complaint with the Administration today! This serious problem affects all E class.

Is this the PZEV were talking about it?

On a PZEV vehicle, fuel tank parts cannot be replaced individually complete tank needs replacement – Emissions Performance/Control warranty covers this for 15 years/150,000 miles in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

So I just got my 07 E350 w/ 50k serviced for a failed fuel pump. I live in Connecticut, does PZEF cover my fuel pumps or no? If, anything I have the part number that my mb dealer used.

If in fact your vehicle is PZEV (code 917) and fuel pump failed, tank should have been replaced in its entirety. Case in point this member had a faulty level sensor see post #12 https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...e-problem.html Attached is a copy of warranty coverage page, fuel pump is covered. Note states referenced in previous post is current inclusive of CT.

So wait, my Mercedes is covered? How should I go about letting my local dealer know about this warranty? Please help, I payed $1,600 for parts and labor, and if it's covered under pzef then please tell me how I should go about explaining this to my local dealer.

Print out previous MY07 page and this MY08 page confirming CT coverage and present to SM.

Okay, but my car is a 2007. And It says on both 07/08 manuals that this manual is for 2007 only or 2008 only. And I called MB customer services and I explained to the rep on the phone about my case with the failed fuel pump and the PZEF, and they told me that my 50k miles warranty is over and it cant be honored or covered? They said, it would be covered for 80,000 or 8 years if there was a star on the fuel pump on the service manual, but there isn't so they cant honor my recent repair? What should I do?

moosejaw 03-09-2012 12:42 AM

What does a star on a fuel pump on a service manual have to do with anything?
8 years or 80000 miles is the standard emissions warranty on all MBs
If you live in CT then the warranty is extended to 15 years or 150K miles
A rep at MBUSA wont know about this
Go to your dealer and ask for a appt to meet with the regional service advisor for your area and print out that PDF and show him.

Here a copy of MY07 “gas” page note * covered for 8/80 all other items 3/50 whichever comes first. Compare it to MY07 “PZEV” page (post 19) “all other items 15/150”. MY08 PZEV page (post 21) simply confirms CT coverage for 15/150. Print all pages and meet with the service manager if refused request they get the MB rep covering dealership involved.

I feel like there going to make me a fool. Im just alittle nervous because both 2007 manuals & 2008 manuals says those warrantys are for those years only. And I feel like they might say that those warrantys are for only that year and that year ONLY... That's the only thing that's holdin me back.
