In the 3 year reliability announced yesterday MB did poorly falling behind Chrysler.

MB explained it by blmaing the M and E classes which brought down the averages. M class I knew about. E surprises me especially since I have an order in.

Mind you since this is a 3 yr thing, we are talking about MY 00 or 99.

It was for MY 2000 original owner cars for a 3 year period. MB finished in a very poor 27th place.

In the experience of E class owners would more recent models fare better in 3 year tests?

I saw this in the NY Times article, and the quote is referencing the 2000 E Class:

"The most common reported problems were excessive brake dust, which can be a result of worn brake pads; malfunctioning side windows; and uneven tire wear."

If those are the "big issues", you can be the judge on whether they are important and whether the newer cars will fare better. Personally, these are not big problems to me, and I had a '98 E320 and was very happy with it over 3 years.

Thanks Jim256.

On another thread I asked if more recent MBs have brought brake dust problem under control.

Does anyone know if we can get defects broken out by class from JD Powers.

What is the Consiumer Reports take on the E?

My service dept is always jammed and there are lots of E class in for service 210's and 211's, beleive me they're not in for brake dust!

My E320 is two weeks old. I took a 350 mile trip over the week end. The brake dust is prominent at this moment. Obviously, the brake pads are brand new. I have had 12 MBs over the years, and they all have had break dust. There are remedies, but they shorten the life of the break pads. I see brake dust as an inconvenience, not a defect. Using wheel wax helps to make the cleaning chore easier.

Always keep in mind that Mercedes' owners may be pickier about small issues than owners of cheaper cars.

I posted this in the C-class forum and I'll post it here also. Okay, let me get this straight: Lexus 163 problems per 100 vehicles = 1.63 problems per vehicle. Honda 218 per 100 = 2.18 per vehicle. MB 318 per 100 = 3.18 per vehicle. So I will have 1.55 more problems in 3 years than if I buy a Lexus and 1 more problem than if I buy a Honda, keeping in mind the biggest complaints included brake dust and bum window switches and the ML (which I think we all know about) is included in the survey.

Please don't misunderstand me, I am in no way trying to take away from Lexuses achievements of quality, they are obviously head and shoulders above everyone else. I am also not trying to make excuses for MB, they have clearly let quality slip and are using cheaper parts.

As I've told many people in the past, I wasn't impressed by MB when they were #1, and I'm not impressed by Lexus because they're #1. IMHO these surveys are and do not sway me in my automobile purchasing decisions

Perhaqps MB is like the Chicago Cubs. Owner loyalty reduces the pressure to put out a better product!

MBZman you are right about a single defect more. But the level of frustration in this very list is high. It seems some defects take a lot of effort to fix.
