7 Speed and Gas Guzzler Tax

Does anyone know if the 7 speed will be available on an October delivery E-500?
Also, will the fuel economy improve enough to eliminate the gas guzzler tax? If I can be sure the 7 speed will be available, I will probably switch my Euro Delivery order from the 320 to the 500.

I am scheduled for a mid-October European Delivery of a 2004 E500 and was told that the 7G transmission was standard on all 2004 E500's. So if yours is a 2004, it should have it.

As for avoidance of the gas guzzler tax, my dealer did not know. Would be a nice savings, though, wouldn't it?

In my opinion, if you are getting the Appearance Package (Sport Package) on an E320, you might as well get the E500 as the cost difference at that point is not as great. In my case, I would surely miss the power of the V8 coming from an E420. I believe that in the long run I will be happier with the car with the larger engine.

I just notified my salesman that I want to switch from the E320 to the E500. I don't really need the E500 power but I was getting concerned that the 320 might seem underpowered and I would feel the need to switch when the 350 engine becomes available. My only real concern about the E500 is the long term reliability of the suspension. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I'd see what the S-Class list has to offer since they have had a similar system for a few years and miles. Just a suggestion. I saw one (S a few years old) at my dealer's, in for repair, and it was sitting completely on it's haunches.

BobCanada - thanks for the info. It seems the Canadian dealers are always better informed than those in the US. By the way, does the dealer know whether all 500's (CLK Class included) will go to the 7 speed transmission at the same time in October 2003?
