'03 E320 - STOP SIGN on dash, car shuts off

according to my wife, twice she has gotten a stop sign light on the dash, a quick msg about "brake" that she cant read because it doesnt stay lit, the brake then gets mushy, she pulls over and the car shuts off. she can then restart the car though. any ideas? I just bought this used so do not have experience with the idiosyncrasies of MB vehicles.

I think you may have the SBC braking system, and that sounds like a problem with it. You ought to have that checked as soon as you can if the brakes are failing. There are lots of posts here about that sort of thing, and MB has been stepping up as to replacement at MB expense under certain circumstances.

Thanks

thanks much for the quick reply Jimbo. I thought i heard once that if the pads or rotors get low or need maintenance, you may also see a dash light and the car may shut off. Am I imagining this?

If the wear sensors indicate that you need new pads, you should get a light to visit workshop, but I don't think that causes a shutdown. In your case the brakes going mushy is what is concerning. I wouldn't take a chance with brakes.

The wear sensor just puts + by the miles to service. However the SBC brakes will flash RED in BIG letters in the FSS stating "stop car now". Funny though no brakes and they tell you to stop.

so the MB dealership tells me that its NOT the SBC unit, of course, it's the Pressure Monitor that sits on top of the SBC unit. is this BS or has anyone heard this one yet. estimate to fix $1,200. how can a German luxury car with less than 100K actually drop something as important as a brake pressure monitor pump, thingy.. really pisses me off. I have a Nissan Pathfinder with 192K miles and a Jeep Liberty with 105K miles in the driveway, and neither has ever had a major repair. thanks for any additional input.
