rumbling/vibrations when accelerating on 2003 E500
Hello all,
My name is Ryan and I am new to this website and forum, but I am glad to be a part of folks that own Mercedes Benz.
I have a 2003 E500 and when I am accelerating at about 30 - 45 mph I feel a vibration / rumbling towards the back of the vehicle.
Does anyone know what this could possibly be?

Put the car on a lift(run the car) and I would start by checking drive shaft flex discs!!

Sounds like glycol contamination of the transmission to me. I had similar symptoms when my E500 trans had coolant in it.

x2 on the glycol contamination. My 2003 just had the same symptoms. I drained the trans fluid and had it tested -- full of coolant (glycol), rust and other metals.

Thanks for the belated feedback, however in the insueing seven months since your original post has you drive shaft fallen out???

Not sure. I know that when I turn corners and accelerate and when I increase speeds I will hear and feel vibration on the back right wheel for about a few seconds then it stops. When I take my foot off the gas pedal to decrease speeds and then accelerate once again the noise persists for a few seconds then stops.

I went to the Mercedes Benz dealership to get a diagnosis last May and the diagnosis showed that I needed a torque mount/ torque strut mount. Do you know what this is? Could this be the reason I'm feeling the vibration on the back right wheel?

My guess is that they are talking about transmission mount, but don't quote me on this. Transmission mount is a really easy job. Might as well check it while under there.

Last May---wow, that was four months before your original September 2013 post and through all this the vibration continues---I guess it doesn't bother you, good luck and if nothing changes keep us posted next year!!

It definitely bothers me, that is why I have constantly been getting advice and opinions on this matter. Another mechanic told me that it could also be a wheel bearing issue

True true, another mechanic told me that this could be possibly a wheel bearing issue. It is so strange that it is happening only on the right rear wheel.

You really don't have to look into it, if you drive it long enough it will just stop and then it will be easy to see what is wrong.

Hii guys i now have a 2004 e320 transitioned from a infiniti so a bit of a upgrade i just had a couple questions it has 130k miles on it clean really good condition i am nee to the Benz world always heard how great they were so end up purchasing one but i do hear a gargling sound when my foot is on the gas pedal from the speeds between 20-45 always whn i start the car its at a 1000rpms automatically i also have a vibration sue to the gargling sound at the same speeds between 20-45 i took it to a family MB specialist he said its, the drive shaft replace would be $450 another thing ive also been experiencing a little jerk at low speeds just as decreasing from accelartion off the freeway you guys have way more experience then i do with the MB if you guys could help id appreciate it

Well you have confused me, you say you have taken the car to an family MB specialist and he has provided you with his diagnosis---are you saying you don't trust the guy or you can't afford the repair or what!!

No the MB mechanic never said anything about the gargiling and slow jerks now as far as the drive shaft he did speak on that of course it was $450 but is that really why the car is vibrating or could it be the (glycol) contamination

Sounds like your mechanic knows what he is taking about---why not let him diagnose what you believe to be contaminated transmission fluid!!! that sounds better than all the guesses

This sounds similar to what my car was doing before an EGR delete. I removed the delete and it went back to doing it, fwiw.

Check:

Rear transmission mount
Transmission output flange for tightness
Flex disks
Centre propshaft bearing
Rear axle CV joints
Glycol test transmission fluid
