Question Should I buy 04 E320

Hello, everyone

I am new to this forum, I am hoping you folks can help me out. I have always bought Japanese luxury cars, but never a German one. However I am considering to buy a 2004 E320 4matic,it has been a one owner car with maintenance always done to it,it has 42k on it.

My question to everyone is how reliable are these cars? I noticed it also has the air suspension as well. I would greatly appreciate your advice and comments as,I will be going to look at this car on Saturday, thank you all.

At around 100,000 miles is when the air suspension is known to have an increased incidence of failure but that could also be age. The 2004 is a good car with average reliability, but the newer the W211 the better as there are certain years pre-facelift that have known issues such as glycol contamination and such.

Have the car inspected by a mechanic and know that a German luxury car will be more expensive to maintain than a Japanese counterpart would (generally speaking) but Mercedes W211 engines are bullet proof in most respects and it is a very solid car overall.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it. I think I will get it, I test drove it and took it to the local MB dealer, they said the car was running and everything was working properly on it.

Good, then it's probably a good car for you to get. Post pics when you do buy it!

^+1 haha definitely.

Also, Vettdvr had quite a number of problems with his, PHILNAPLES, but it seems as if he really got a lemon. I know several members with 2004 E-Classes that are doing just fine. But he is also one of the most experienced members on this website with amazing technical knowledge of the W211 so I would trust his opinion too

I have two. And my next Mercedes will be a 2010 E63. so if you like the ride and handling of a Mercedes then buy it, if you are prepared for high cost repairs and maintenance. Its not a car that is cheap to operate like a little 4cyl. Asian car.

IF the 04 has SBC, and Airmatic I would steer clear because the rubber parts age which will crack result in failures and very high repair expense. Arnott is the way to go in replacement parts, but if you buy the 04 and do a lot of driving I would expect to spend in parts alone 3 to 5000 in the next 30 or so months. But as stated perhaps my car was just "one" of the ones to avoid but it is my only data point first hand and I did a lot of the repair work on it from ball joints, air suspension and other work.

hell yeah!!! my W211 is my 7th merc and hopefully not the last. you will have problems of course. Sometimes you would even if you get a brand new car, so let alone a used. just do your research and you'll thank yourself in the future. Goodluck!
