Brake pad wear...Frt. vs. rear

Back in the day, conventional wisdom said rear brake pads last about twice as long as the fronts, and rotors typically will last through two sets of pads.

What have your experiences been?

(FYI-my '09 E350 4Matic has 58K miles and both the frt. and rear pads have about 25% of remaining thickness before replacement is recommended.)

If you're the type that always lightly taps their brakes, your rears will go out first. If you often slam the brakes or brake harder in general, your fronts will go out first. If you're the type in between, then your brakes will probably go out evenly.

Tire wear is a good indication of this on all wheel drive cars such as 4-Matic, you can tell that your front tires wear out faster than your back because of hard braking and thus your pads and rotors will too. I think rotors last through, generally, 2 to 3 sets of pad changes but it all depends on how aggressive the pad is and how hard you drive your car. It's usually a discretionary deal - just make sure you don't wear down to metal on metal because you'll trash your rotors right away.

Just changed the rear brakes and lasted me 110k miles - down to like 2mm. The sensor didn't work, don't know why. I have 230k on the odometer. Fronts I've changed at 150k and are about 65-70%, so 80k so far. I drive all highway. New pads don't make dust like the old version. Old version fronts lasted me 80k. I use only Mercedes dealer rotors and pads. I do 2 pad changes for the life of the rotor.

I recommend StopTech Street Peformance Pads and R1 Concepts Premium Rotors, they're much less dusty than stock and are a definite performance increase over the OEM parts - and MUCH less expensive too when you have them installed by an indie.
