The MPG Game

.....and I wasn't even driving like Ms. Daisy. Pretty sweet for "city driving". Must have been a lot of water vapor in the air or something ;-)
So what's the best you've been able to get?
This is in my 2004 E500 - shows you that even that large V8 is not that much of a gas hog even when driving relatively fast.

Obviously the engine also makes a big impact. I would expect the CDI to walk all over an E500, for example.
My E500 has big enough final drive ratio that it is very happy cruising at 80+ without using much fuel.

That 7th gear sure makes a difference. At 70mph my 5-speed does about 2200RPM, while your 7-speed does just about 1800RPM at 75mph. Quite a significant improvement MPG-wise. Plus, lack of 4-Matic only helps the fuel economy.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
This is much more noticeable in bicycles but it also is true in cars. The less energy loss due to vertical motion, the better. Either a smoother road or softer tires or a "softer" suspension. This is why it is so helpful to have lower weight wheels as it reduces the energy needed to move the wheels over small road imperfections that the tires do not absorb. (It also helps reduce rotational inertia which helps in acceleration, but that is another topic)

When I checked the mileage on this tank after some city driving the average was 37.1!! I drove it for another 200 or so miles before filling it up.

This was the same tank as above but notice I had driven 400 miles and had 398 of range left!! I will say that was driving about 62MPH behind a truck (earlier on the tank I had been going 70+) but that is just amazing for such a heavy car!!
